Come Out and Play
The Offspring Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You gotta keep 'em separated

Like the latest fashion
Like a spreading disease
The kids are strappin' on their way to the classroom
Getting weapons with the greatest of ease
The gangs stake out their own campus locale
And if they catch you slippin' then it's all over pal
If one guys colors and the others don't mix
They're gonna bash it up
Bash it up, bash it up, bash it up

Hey, man you talkin' back to me?
Take him out
You gotta keep 'em separated
Hey, man you disrespecting me?
Take him out
You gotta keep 'em separated
Hey, don't pay no mind
If you're under eighteen you won't be doing any time
Hey, come out and play

By the time you hear the siren
It's already too late
One goes to the morgue and the other to jail
One guy's wasted and the other's a waste

It goes down the same as the thousand before
No one's getting smarter
No one's learning the score
Your never ending spree of death and violence and hate
Is gonna tie your own rope
Tie your own rope
Tie your own

Hey, man you disrespecting to me?
Take him out
You gotta keep 'em separated
Hey, man you talking back to me?
Take him out
You gotta keep 'em separated
Hey, don't pay no mind
If you're under eighteen you won't be doing any time
Hey, come out and play

It goes down the same as the thousand before
No one's getting smarter
No one's learning the score
Your never ending spree of death and violence and hate
Is gonna tie your own rope
Tie your own rope
Tie your own

Hey, man you talkin' back to me?
Take him out
You gotta keep 'em separated
Hey, man you disrespecting me?
Take him out
You gotta keep 'em separated
Hey, don't pay no mind

If you're under eighteen you won't be doing any time
Hey, come out and play

Overall Meaning

The Offspring's "Come Out and Play" is a song that tackles the issue of gang violence among youths. In the first verse, the song describes how gangs have evolved into something like a fashion that high school students are following, and how they are arming themselves with weapons with ease. The second verse reiterates how gang fights often end with one death and one going to jail, and how nothing is learned from these events. The chorus emphasizes the importance of separating oneself from potential trouble, even if it means disrespecting someone. The final verse describes the futility and tragedy of a never-ending cycle of violence.

Through the lyrics, the band is stressing the importance of prevention when it comes to gang violence. The band is urging people to stay away from joining a gang as it is a destructive force that often ends in tragedy. Also, the band advocates for the respect of law and taking action against those who disrespect others or threaten their lives.

My oldest daughter was four when this song was on the radio. One day we're riding the car and she's head banging and singing "Ya gotta keep em separated." I laughed my butt off. This song has a special place in my heart. Thanks for the memories.
