D.U.I.
The Offspring Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Three in the morning and I gotta be someplace,
I don't remember where
friends try to make me stay, or call me a cab home,
I grab my keys and a beer

Cops they took my license away,
got my car out of impound today
I've been drunk since last Saturday,
better stay out of my way

I drink and drive
Feel so alive
Never take that dive
Feel so alive
Doing 95
I drink and drive
Feel so alive
I drink and drive

Early in the morning and the freeway's deserted, like its all mine
I'm trying to set a new drunken speed record,
but I can't drive a straight line
Flashing lights, split the night
I'm tossing bottles as I swerve to the right
now I've slammed my face into the back of a big rig
At least you'll never get me, you fucking pigs!
Designate someone other than me,
I'm so drunk I can hardly see
Another shot of Jager and I turn the key,
I got so many places to be

When I'm on a binge, my friends all cringe
They won't drive at night

'Cause way down on the freeway it's such a fright
But I think I drive alright

Overall Meaning

The Offspring's song D.U.I. is about drunk driving and its consequences. The lyrics tell the story of a person who drinks and drives regularly and does not fear the law. The person is so intoxicated that they do not remember where they need to be or how to get there. They try to leave despite their friends' attempts to convince them to stay or call a cab home. At the same time, the person is aware that the cops have taken their license away, and they got their car out of the impound the same day. They have been drunk since last Saturday and better stay out of people's way.

The lyrics describe the person's thrill of drinking and driving and feeling alive while doing so. The freeway is deserted, making it feel like it's all theirs. The person attempts to set a new drunken speed record but then crashes into a big rig. They toast bottles and swear, knowing that they will never be caught. Despite their friends' concern and fear, the person believes that they drive alright.

The song highlights the dangers of drunk driving and its consequences. Although it appears to glorify the act of drinking and driving, it ultimately condemns it. It shows how reckless, selfish, and dangerous it is to drink and drive. The song encourages people to designate a sober driver and the importance of never getting behind the wheel while under the influence.
