Fix You
The Offspring Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She wakes up
Rage and grace
Pulling me closer, pushing away
And me
The sharpest thorn on your vine
Twisting and turning
We're all intertwined
Broken wing
Empty glass
Words that scream and bounce right back
She says, you know
We'd all like to rearrange

I wish I could fix you
And make you how I want you
I wish I could fix you
And I wish you could fix me

I wish I could heal you
And mend where you are broken
I wish I could heal you
And I wish you could heal me

HA la la la...

A beaming sunrise buries the night
The setting sun destroys the light
The she says, baby
I've gotta get going
Cutting each other
Without even knowing

She sees a million stars
Like holes in the sky

All God's tears for her they cry
And I am in her rain

Overall Meaning

The Offspring's song "Fix You" seems to be about a troubled relationship, where both parties are struggling with their own personal demons and seem to be unable to fix each other. The opening lines set the tone for the song, describing the singer's partner waking up with "rage and grace", pulling and pushing him away. The metaphor of the sharpest thorn on the vine suggests that their relationship is both beautiful and painful, with the two of them twisting and turning around each other in a complex, interconnected dance.

The chorus of the song is a plea for healing - the singer wishes that he could fix his partner, and that she could fix him in return. This sense of mutual need and dependence is echoed in the second verse, which describes the two of them "cutting each other without even knowing". Despite the difficulties they face, the singer remains captivated by his partner, describing her as a beautiful but troubled soul who cries "all God's tears" for her. In the end, he finds himself "in her rain", drawn in even as he acknowledges how destructive the relationship can be.

I love the Offspring and have followed them for 20 years plus. They rock really hard (even now) but what amazes me is their songwriting - they write incredibly catchy melodies and the lyrics almost always get you thinking. This is one of the best songs about co-dependence ever written.

The Offspring is one of those rare precious bands where I start happily singing along and a few songs later I'm in tears.
