Sin City
The Offspring Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Diamonds and dust
(home at last) Poor man last, rich man first
Lamborghini's, caviar
Dry martinis, Shangri-la
I got a burning feeling
Deep inside of me
It's yearning
But I'm going to set it free

[Chorus]
I'm going in to sin city
I'm gonna win in sin city
Where the lights are bright
Do the town tonight
I'm gonna win in sin city

(I'm gonna rule you baby)
Ladders and snakes
Ladders give, snakes take
Rich man, poor man, beggarman, thief
Ain't got a hope in hell, that's my belief

Fingers Freddy, Diamond Jim
They're getting ready, (Better get ready,)
Look out I'm coming in ('cause I'm coming in)
So spin that wheel, cut that pack
And roll those loaded dice

Bring on the dancing girls
And put the champagne on ice

Overall Meaning

The Offspring's "Sin City" is a high-energy rock song that describes the pleasures and passions that are associated with Las Vegas, also known by the moniker, "Sin City." The opening lines of the song "Diamonds and dust, (home at last) Poor man last, rich man first" speak to the seductive Vegas siren song: that anyone is capable of making it big, and leaving behind the harsh reality of local life - as represented by dust - and ascend to the realm of the elite, represented by diamonds. The line "Lamborghini's, caviar, Dry martinis, Shangri-la" are classic icons of luxury, and reinforce the idea that Vegas is a place where one can experience the best that life has to offer.

In the chorus, the singer acknowledges the intense allure of Vegas, singing "I'm going in to sin city/ I'm gonna win in sin city/ Where the lights are bright/ Do the town tonight/ I'm gonna win in sin city." The idea of "winning" in sin city is not limited to the traditional idea of gambling success, but includes the emotional thrill that can be felt upon entering a fantastic world of bright lights, entertainment, luxury and excitement. The closing lines, "Bring on the dancing girls/ And put the champagne on ice” are a direct invitation to indulge in the hedonistic pleasures that Sin City has to offer.
