You're Gonna Go Far Kid
The Offspring Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Show me how to lie, you're getting better all the time
And turning all against the one is an art that's hard to teach
Another clever word sets off an unsuspecting herd
And as you step back into line, a mob jumps to their feet

Now dance, fucker, dance, man, he never had a chance
And no one even knew it was really only you
And now you steal away
Take him out today
Nice work you did
You're gonna go far, kid

With a thousand lies and a good disguise
Hit 'em right between the eyes
Hit 'em right between the eyes
When you walk away, nothing more to say
See the lightning in your eyes
See 'em running for their lives

Slowly out of line, and drifting closer in your sight
So play it out, I'm wide awake, it's a scene about me
There's something in your way and now someone is gonna pay
And if you can't get what you want, well, it's all because of me

Now dance, fucker, dance, man, I never had a chance
And no one even knew, it was really only you
And now you'll lead the way
Show the light of day
Nice work you did
You're gonna go far, kid
Trust deceived

With a thousand lies and a good disguise
Hit 'em right between the eyes
Hit 'em right between the eyes
When you walk away, nothing more to say
See the lightning in your eyes
See 'em running for their lives

Now dance, fucker, dance, he never had a chance
And no one even knew, it was really only you
So dance, fucker, dance, I never had a chance
It was really only you

With a thousand lies and a good disguise
Hit 'em right between the eyes
Hit 'em right between the eyes
When you walk away, nothing more to say
See the lightning in your eyes
See 'em running for their lives
Clever alibis, Lord of the Flies
Hit 'em right between the eyes
Hit 'em right between the eyes
When you walk away, nothing more to say

See the lightning in your eyes
See 'em running for their lives

Overall Meaning

"You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" by The Offspring is a song about manipulation and deception. The lyrics are about a person who has mastered the art of lying and manipulating people to do what they want. The song talks about how this person can turn a group of people against one person and make them believe whatever he says. The chorus, "now dance, fucker, dance, man, he never had a chance," is a sarcastic invitation to dance for the person who has been played by the manipulator. The chorus repeats, "nice work you did, you're gonna go far, kid," indicating that even though the people being manipulated are being hurt, the manipulator is still succeeding.

The second verse is about the manipulator's true feelings of power and delusion. The lyrics "with a thousand lies and a good disguise, hit 'em right between the eyes," refers to the manipulator's ability to hide their true intentions, while still achieving their desired outcome. However, the bridge of the song changes the power dynamic. The lyrics, "now someone is gonna pay, and if you can’t get what you want, well, it’s all because of me," suggest that the manipulator is now the one being manipulated or facing consequences, and they must face the reality that their actions have consequences.

Overall, "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid," shows how powerful lies and deception can be in controlling others. The song's structure, with its sarcastic and upbeat tone, highlights the uncomfortable and dangerous nature of the message.

The fun part is the song is about a guy teaching another fella how to manipulate others and crowds.When he say's ''you are gonna go far, kid'' he also manipulates his student. Makes them believe they are decieving others while in reality, the teacher actually uses the ''kid'' to do his bidding.
Trust decieved. Awesome.

Yet when i was a kid, didnt even realised what it meant and just danced along with the tune.

"Do you listen to the offspring?"
"What?"
"Do you listen.. to the offspring."
"I uh, used to."
"You're gonna go far, kid!"
"..."
"Do you think he got the reference?"

Some of the best song writing I've ever noticed. In the end, after using lies and manipulation to improve his position, he leads the way and shows everyone the light.

He is able to do this because his success is enough for others to see him as a role model, leader, or authority figure. Over time, this would result in more people using the same methods to succeed in their goals and begin normalizing the behavior over time.

This takes the song from being about a person using deceit for their benefit and elevates it to another level entirely.

Those kids did indeed go far. They've become our businessmen, congressmen, senators, lawyers, judges, and even our president.

I could go on forever about the subtle brilliance in this song, but I'll leave it there for now. Thanks for reading 😉

@rawonions8827

Its about a manipulative person, not a hero. Sure, if the hero is a sociopath, but probably not the context you were thinking of.

“Another clever word, sets off an unsuspecting herd.”

“With a thousand lies and a good disguise”

“Turning all against the one is an art that’s hard to teach.”

“Something in your way, someone is gonna pay.”

So... not a hero- more of villain acknowledging another’s intelligence and aptitude for manipulation.

Somehow I never realized that this song is about a terrible person, and not a kickass graduation song

@brandoncarriveaux6717

Does this mean I'm a terrible person?

@jonesc3638

I'd pay to see a graduation with this song

@reversed2489

@Jack Crimson I think(but I'm not sure) its about a guy who's manipulating a guy and making them think they're "going to go far," but they really don't believe in them at all, and they never actually had any chance. They're just lying to them, and maybe getting them to do things that will benefit them(the singer) while making the manipulated guy think the singer is helping them

@Hanatash

@@reversed2489 It's about a kid who's an expert manipulator. The narrator admires him but is ultimately just another puppet. On the whole (if you've seen the video), it's probably meant to convey that manipulation will get you what you want, but it's immoral and self-indulgent.

@youtubestuff683

The music video shows it's by a corrupt person who uses their powers for "evil" and stuff
