@DJ Thta's the issue. You NEED to know camera's and you need to put in the work to make that great shot.
People don't care for that (99.9%) and don't have the time as most of the time a moment passes by when your punching in your settings.

If you need to go all manual and pro to get a great shot you might aswell use a DSLR.

The device is a SMARTphone, which means it should be able to do the work for you if you choose to do that.
The Sony's don't have that option. They make mediocre pictures in Auto (Basic) mode which is what i am trying to point out for many weeks now.

Nobody cares (99.9% of the people) wether you can make it work or not when your a Pro.
People want results, not excuses.

@Sergio Casino I usually don't do comment in smartphone video but since I live with Sony ecosystem, I will tell you something.

I have a 65" Bravia X90J 4K, a Sony HT 5.1 BDV-E4100, a 1990 Sony Walkman, a WH-1000MX4 headphone which is really awesome, a 1995 PS1, 2001 PS2, 2006 PS3, PSP and a Vita, PS4 Pro and recently bought PS5, a PlayStation VR, a Sony mirrorless Alpha 7 III which is IMO the best mirrorless camera out there and bunch of other Sony stuffs (old stereo, earphones, 1997 handycam, etc.)

I usually only watch video games channel but YT sucks algorithm bought me here. Let me tell you a story:

Back in 2018 when God of War 4 was released, I watched lots of game streamer videos and also game journalists/reviewers to see if the game is good or bad before I decided to purchase it. Mostly the so called "game journalists" were bad at playing this action type kind of game. Although the game itself has a great metacritic score, but I was not quite convinced because the very first streamers that I watched played the game in a very terrible way. It's hard to watch him play the game and makes the game looks terrible. But one game streamer played this game beautifully, flawless. Then when I had the game on my hand, it really beyond my expectation. It's an amazing game. It's really my type of game.

Sometimes even if you're a gamer, doesn't mean every game genre is for you. I'm pretty much expert at action game but really suck at racing game.

If you don't know how to use Xperia 1 series camera, let me use it. I will produce a photo that will beat all of those Iphone and S22 Ultra photo. I pretty much familiar with the basic concept of the Pro mode in Xperia 1 series since it has a little bit similar UI as the A7. And I also like to take photos when I need to travel but I don't always bring my A7 because it will took space in my backpack and when I had to travel between cities and I can't bring my briefcase so a Xperia will do the job for me.

I received my Xperia IV on Wednesday and I sent it back on Friday when using the 85mm and 125mm telephotos and shooting in raw, the images just come out soft and blurry you would think my shutter speed was wrong for the focal length or I had not focussed properly.

As for the DNG files even at low ISO they was extremenly noisy .

I am a sony alpha shooter and love Sony products but I have got to say it was a massive disappointment.
I likely either buy S22 ultra or wait for the iPhone 14 now.

If you look on reddit there's people discussing how soft the telephoto shots are apparently there is a update releasing to improve it

For the price it is not worth it massive disappointment

It’s clear to me that the Sony is really designed for photographers who will shoot in RAW;DNG only. Sony does not really do computational photography. Putting this phone in a novice photographer will yield terrible results.

I'm a sony shooter and I decided to sell my iPhone and switch to the IV received it Wednesday and sent it back Friday the new telephoto zooms when shooting raw come out extremely soft to the point you would think I've not focused properly and my shutter speed not correct for the focal length.

The DNG files even at ISO 160 / 200 are super noisy it been such a dissapointment so glad I returned it. I will likely wait and get a iPhone 14 or pick up the s22 Ultra.

If you are looking at getting the sony don't waste your cash apparently there releasing a firmware update to fix the softness on the telephoto zoom.

@Ygor Cortes the problem with third party manual app is thay they only offer 1 second shutter speed. Sony's photo pro app have Auto, Program mode, shutter priority mode and manual mode. That's the biggest difference, it also offers real time subject tracking and metering mode works well. Unlike other phone that offers manual manual in their pro mode but don't have these.

If the point of this review is their capability of being point and shoot camera I would say Sony won't win 😅 however Sony's photo pro app does have Auto mode you can just set it to Auto mode, everytime you open photo pro app it will automatically be in Auto mode it's basically the same thing. Point and shoot.

Great idea. DSLR cams 'can' shoot in RAW if you set them up to shoot in raw. They can and do shoot in full auto mode by default, therefore this would be a great idea. I watched this video with the sound off so I was assessing each set of photos on my own terms. I have never had an iPhone and never particularly want to own one but on the majority of image examples, I picked the iPhone image!

I think it's also important to remember that the Sony is still in pre-production so what we get here isn't the final result. Also, what we think "looks good" can also be subjective. Sony's traditional approach has always been taking pictures and videos as how we see in real life, not what we think looks colorful or contrasty.

I would even argue I prefer some of the Sony's night shots more because it's how we're supposed to see things at night, he even mentioned at 19:19 "he couldn't see anything" which was the point of the Sony looking too dark.

The iphone makes night scenes look bright, but in reality, the scene was probably much more darker and pitch black like how night time should actually look. 19:48 clearly illustrates this how the Sony and Iphone comparison is literally night and day. You cannot see the stars as clearly like how the Samsung and Sony did. 20:15 is a good example when taking it right with the Sony and how the night sky should look.

I chose 2 times the Sony, 9 times the Iphone and 22 times the Samsung.
So the Samsung is the clear winner for me!
I really would live to see another comparison between the pixel and the samsung after this sick firmware update!

Picked the Xperia every time but as always it's down to most accurate reproduction Vs most pleasing to the majority out of the box.

I would also add that unless they've changed it the "camera" apps auto mode is rubbish on the Xperia - shoot with the alpha camera pro program and it's a different beast.

Sony seems determined not to add software to their point and shoot camera phones that would easily keep up with their competitors. They also choose to keep their auto and pro shooting systems separate from each other which I think is a fundamental mistake.

A combined system that focuses on photos and video optimised for the best possible results, but also gives the user the creativity to adjust settings easily would surely be the best option for Sony camera phones.

I guessed all the Sony shots correctly. When it comes to colour rendition and computational photography, their ethos is minimal post processing, maximum user control.
Also this is a pre production unit, whereas the others are well refined and have benefited from multiple software updates.

Well, Sony's colours are the most accurate to real life generally. Thing is... people tend to prefer extra pop and saturation. Personally, I prefer accuracy. I don't want pictures to try and improve on what I'm seeing in real life. I want pictures to capture what I see in real life. Also... it's often easy to tell the Sony ones apart because they don't oversharpen stones and whatnot. So basically whenever those textured rocks don't look extremely sharp, it's Sony's picture.

A lot of the images picked, if you converted it into a grayscale image and put it against a waveform monitor, all the values are going to fall between 20 and 80 or something or even 30 and 60 in some cases. I think some images look best if they look like how they should be. E.g. the tree shot at night. Let shadows be shadows sometimes.

Well, these folks represent casuals. They prefer pop, overly saturated colours and grossly exaggerated details. Most people don't realize that stuff in real life doesn't look like that. They just see what looks juicier and assume that's the best and closest to real life. They want to remember things better than what they actually were.

I like the test, BUT for me the comparison isn’t 100% accurate. The Sony for me has several features which can be used to make better snaps. Apple and Samsung are without a doubt incredible point and shoot mainstream shooters, the software is incredible. Sony are certainly aiming to the more creative and more niche market.

Hey, I got 20 for S22, 14 for iPhone, and the food one for the Sony. Quick comments are that iPhones absolutely rule videos (maybe not slo-mo), as well as being the brightest at night. The Samsung does the best most of the time for selfies, and for detailed night time shots.

Why anyone would want nighttime to look like daytime is beyond me. DSLR's don't even do this, and when dialling the aperture down with a tri-pod you get the best low-light performance anyway. The Sony would easily win this with a tri-pod as the lenses are far faster and better. You guys don't know anything but keep sending your dollars to Apple, be my guest.

As a Samsung user, I think the Sony is mostly made to use it's manual settings and RAW-output. It doesn't look like the Alpha-team focused on the AI/Automatic modes at all.

Also, I'm really impressed by the S22. Great improvments with software updates, giving it a pretty big jump from the older flagships.

Iphone still has a very good video. Maybe the other brands should increase the bitrate?

for my money the iphone's greens in dark lighting look really off. but in portraits the AI is just so good, I cant complain. Also, often times the most realistic image is also the one that does worst in the side by sides.

That’s pretty cool. I found that I preferred iPhone pictures over the Samsung ones. They are all pretty good but just shows how controversial computational photography is going to be in the years to come. As we move away from realism and towards what we want to see, what’s more stunning or attractive. I suppose I like the exposure and colour temperature because that’s what I’m used to. I need to try DSLR’s to recalibrate to realism.

Very clear that Sony is sticking to the conventional photography with much less computation. Easy to tell. I think in a professional’s hands maybe the Sony will be able to tell a much better story. Without computation, all the work lies in the photographer. Still an excellent system from these photos. Though macro isn’t close enough. And for that price actual cameras would be a consideration, so it’s not a great value as a phone.

This is not a good and fair comparison - First, the 1 IV still runs pre-production software, whereas the other two phones have gotten multiple updates. Second, you can't maximize 1 IV's potential by just using its auto mode. The device is not intended to be used in this way. A lot of the scenarios with preference of brighter/darker exposure, you could just dial in some adjustments.

I would consider doing a 2nd round once you are able to get actual production version of the Sony phone (or at least its firmware) and also using both photo apps that come bundled in it. Not in order to "defend" Sony, but precisely to get it a "fair" chance, since in this video Xperia 1 IV is a pre-production unit and it's unclear which photo app is in use, so it's possible that final version or different app can provide different results. To save time, you can compare it only against S22, since it won this competition.

I had the Samsung eek out over the iPhone and none for Sony. I get the test here is a lot of point and shoot, but I thought Sony’s thing was the manual mode so I’m just a little curious how much that was used outside the exposure on the night shot. I get like almost everyone just taps the camera app and takes the pic but I’d be curious set shots where you’re using the manual mode and really dialing in the pic if it can do better.

I prefer the S22 in most of the cases.
You guys give too much attention to color and non technical aspects of the image. I wouldn't evaluate that way because its too personal and can be fixed so easily later. I would give most of my points to the edge detection on portrait mode and detail on night mode.

While I like this series and I played along (20 for S22U, 12 for iPhone, 4 for SONY), casual point and shoot is not the target for this device.
It's a bit like Samsung ExpertRAW - all about manual settings and working with RAW files. Then you can push wonders out of this cameras.

But still - with such a price tag, SONY needs to work on their algorithms, even for a basic auto mode shots.

Thanks for all the effort. It's a lot of time and energy taking photos with all 3 multiple times, prepping them for the comparison and etc. However, when you mentioned portrait shots, do you mean you use the tele lens? Because I can be taking a portrait shot of a person with the wide lens instead of the telephoto. It would be good if you point out which lens you are using when taking for each set of those photos, whether it's the telephoto, the wide or the ultrawide. I do believe it makes a big different which lens you use when taking the photos. It's easy to twig the results when different lens are used when doing these comparison. Also, some companies put more emphasis on the main (wide) lens and the other 2 are just bad. Although megapixel should make a huge different, but it does to some extend. Thanks again!

I've never seen pictures like these from a Sony.
I guess there's a learning curve.
Because it doesn't work the way all the other phones do.
I know it, I switched from a 1 III to a 13 Pro. I take consistently worse pictures (according to me) with the iPhone.
Maybe that's because I tend to like my pictures more natural and less processed. And I still see that here.
I wouldn't be worried switching to a 1 IV.

As a iPhone user I was surprised that I took the Xperias photos most of the time because the other two looked like ‚ready for Instagram‘, completely oversharpened (which has nothing to do with the sharpness produced by the sensor and the lense and is hard to get rid of or tweak in editing), unnatural bright and processed colors… but not like a natural starting point to receive a great photo via editing.

I got an S22U a few months ago and all of this marketing stuff from Sony had me feeling some buyers' remorse - thank you for the relief!

After the first two I could immediately tell which was which (iPhone skin tone has some dead giveaways) and the S22 is almost always my pick before the reveal too. Good to know that it was mostly pre/post-production (isn't it always) that's making some of these early Sony videos really shine. Amazing tech though

The craziest thing is that Sony supplies the sensors for pretty much all major smartphones. It goes to show how critical computational engineering is to photography today. Well done by Samsung and Apple's engineering team.

I would love for Sony to integrate better software with their professional cameras and add some type of Flash storage.

Sony X-IV : dark, so the pic is dark, bright, so it is bright, sony is trying to make the photo looks same with your eyes
Other : when it dark, AI will make it brighter, because some people love to see it.

Again, The Xperia is a NICHE product for a NICHE market. It's focus is on manual photography and it excels in that. It'd be nice for Sony to have a better Auto mode but I'm really not surprised they don't have one, their customers don't intend on using Auto mode. If they had a better Auto mode they'd definitely have a larger market share and could attract more customers but Sony doesn't want that.

This year's Sony had a lot of hype while the past years didn't really have much. And they performed well while this one underperformed in every other way. You guys forgot to mention about how hot the Sony Xperia 1 IV gets when the camera app is open. They spent more time and resources on building up hype for it and underdelivering. Previous years, they didn't care much as the 1.6k price is already a niche market as is. My Lumia 1020 perfumes equally bad and sometimes better than the Sony. Almost a decade old phone performing the same is just insane. Actually it isn't. Sony Xperia 1 IV is the one that is bad. Lumia 950 takes better pictures in hdr which is quite old now. I use Lumia devices as Windows Phones 8.X and Windows 10 Mobile lack almost every software tweaking.

7:39 Xperia, looks really natural and clean. The center obviously had fake dynamic range and too contrasty.
11:49 iPhone has fake sky but the skin tone is kinda okay. Samsung is really warm. Xperia is balanced in color and contrast. The Xperia shot would look great when edited too.
15:11 Center. Does not look over processed and the flaring looks better to my eyes than the one on the right. The iPhone just has that too much contrast it does not even look good in that shot.

As a Sony Alpha camera user i like the camera app interface and menu options on the Xperia 1 IV because they are the same as on my Sony camera. But the image quality isn't that good like my S22 Ultra. I wish that one day the Sony camera interface will be availible in an app in the Google Play Store.

Both the Samsung and iPhone had recent firmware updates.

I was seeing some of your comparisons where you melt over the images of the iPhone that uses Sony sensors as well as the Samsung but I see extremely artificial things like the colors and the lack of detail in the other images. It is clear that the Xperia image did not Auto Blur the background of the Image but the Xperia Auto Mode still needs to go a long way. In terms of quality, comparing color balance, contrast, brightness and the real quality of human skin as well as colors, we are faced with an image post processing that does everything so artificially where reality does not exist.

I’ve been buying Sony Xperias before. But they just lack in the camera software. I’ve been saying every year for a decade that they’ll get it better soon but it never does. Crazy because their mirrorless cameras are the best on the market.

I can make the Sony look great using Pro camera app

Its automatic mode isn't great
But if you're not a novice you can use the Pro app which many people can't since they are off course not skilled enough

Seems quite irresponsible for Sony's marketing team to send out these phones for review before they're ready. I'm sure the engineers weren't too happy about that.

I am pretty sure that the low light results for the 1 IV is not really fair. I got better results from my Xperia 1.

I think it's pretty clear that the Sony has objectively better camera hardware but the isp and software is so far behind that the Samsung and iPhone just produce more pleasing, fine tuned pictures.

I believe whoever used the Sony Xperia 1 do not know how to use it properly and was mainly dependent on auto settings. I've been watching reviews from photographers, videographers and cinematographers and they love the phone and its cameras. The phone is not for all. The target are those who know their way around photography and filming.

Funny but in almost every photo I always chose the one that was taken with the iPhone, almost inmediatly! I have to disagree with Max tech on this video, iPhone was much better for my taste.

I voted for Samsung the most in this test, it was followed by Apple, and the Xperia was rubbish in the majority of the shots.

The oppo find x5 pro takes better pictures than the s22 ultra (exynos) I owned both and compared them. Even DXO Marks rated the s22 ultra low compared to some last year phones.

Picked majority of iPhone except for the latter night shots , the Samsung killed it with the stars. The Sony was just bad

Keep in mind guys, Xperia 1 IV is running pre production software and its more about manual camera controls i.e. made for pro photographers/videographers (targeted to a specific niche)

@cuong ong No, I am not saying that S22 Ultra & iPhone 12 Pro are not for pro, they are...but Sony is just for pros..no one else..they themselves target people who like to tinker with manual modes & all

Are you telling the sony is for pro photographer? What about a pro using s22ultra or iPhone 13 pro? Sony will still look crap. I'm not biased, I have sony phone, at 1600$ I had to use manual mode to get the pic right? No thanks

@Cheuk Nam Siu That's also true...more logical choice would be to buy a pro camera instead...but yaa as they say "niche" , maybe they want it for vlogging or some specific shots with a smartphone added & now some great mics in addition to 4K screen & hq speakers

@Rishabh Gusain If something so mission critical needs to be shot in full manual with the depth of the photo pro of the xperia (tbh not sure what does a photog need beyond ISO and shutter control considering the fixed aperture and deep depth of field of phone cameras), any sane pro/content creator would have at least brought an RX100.

sony has variable aperture actually hardware zooming rest two are all equipped with AI and software photography tools during comparison sony's eye focus clarity missed just focused on other minor details which is not considerable sony has various manuals option to focus the subject to capture night stars are critical to phones camera sony has better stars visible sony should be clear here its hardware and very natural photography ..
