My upstairs neighbor threw various heavy objects on the floor and yelled because I asked him not to blast rap music during quiet hours. Quiet hours start at 10 pm. He’s unemployed (even before COVID) so he's home all day listening to music too loudly. But I never say anything and just wear my Beats (I work from home). I only ask that I can sleep at night and he throws tantrums, ranting about it all night into the next morning. I am glad there are spaces where we can talk about our neighbors. Sometimes I feel they are my roommates, that they seem to live with me in the same apartment. I have a collection of all kinds of earplugs and earmuffs. I am learning kindness, self-peace, and mindfulness because I do not want to turn into a crazy neighbor. Much sympathy and empathy! I didn't expect to miss my office whatsoever, but I have to admit that it was wonderfully devoid of shouting small children, probably-small noises being amplified to jarring levels by flimsy wood-frame walls and floors, and the apartment management's sudden bizarre conviction that this is the perfect time to embark on pressure-washing and twice-a-week all-day leaf-blowing projects. (And, since I'm probably the "annoyingly loud neighbor" when I call my parents or listen to the news, I also miss the ability to have normal-volume phone conversations without worrying that I'm either deeply irritating my neighbors or giving them an accidental trove of personal information.)

Correct. It can be really annoying to the point that it impacts your health overall. What I do: practice mindfulness and kindness, try to block noise, disengage with neighbors, do not want to fall into a spiral of conflict, concentrate and focus on what I need to do, work on my plans (finish my doctorate), and then, soon after graduation, find another place. Next time, I will be looking for an upstairs, top place.

My downstairs neighbours used to drill holes repeatedly in the wall, and have a big house party at 9AM on a Sunday morning, every week. Or that's what it sounded like. In fairness, I used to practise karate and start singing in the middle of the night and scoot around the room on my wheelie chair for fun, and sometimes do keepie-ups with my football, so yeah, I think I was the bad upstairs neighbour. I grew up in a detached house so it didn't really occur to me they could hear these things, they never complained and they were pretty noisy themselves so I don't think it made any difference. The only thing that really worried me about them is they used to beat their children quite a lot which was not nice to hear, but then things got better after a while. African parents I guess, they were probably doing badly in their school work and then improved.

In my country it's illegal to hit children so it's quite rare. However at that time I was living in a different country and all my neighbours were Africans. In African countries hitting your children is not just legal but actively encouraged. It's the same in many other areas of the world of course, but quite different to modern Western culture. Not sure what religion has to do with anything, there are many African countries which practise the same religion as my home country, even the same sect of Christianity, but the culture couldn't be more different.

Nah, I'm pretty sure tribal peoples beat their children, and I'm 100% sure that people outside of Europe were beating their children long before the arrival of monotheistic religions. They do it in polytheistic India quite a lot too. If you read pre-Christian Middle Eastern texts you will find that the Pagan Sumerians and Assyrians were extremely violent towards their wives and children also. It was Christianity more than anything else which put an end to this in Western society. Christ says 'turn the other cheek' after all.

Unless they have kids, who are the source of the noise, then you're screwed (like me). I complained many times with my previous neighbours but they said they can't simply put a small kid in chains. right now I'm just forcing myself to get accustomed, because it's quarantine time and they are stuck inside 24/7, it must be tough for a family with kids. but when the quarantine will be over and the schools will re-open I will force my spineless self to go talk to them if they keep on making noise. so that they at least do something about the chairs.
if you are dealing with kids too, I suggest you buy sound canceling headphones. if you can't, use earplugs and add normal headphones on top of those, playing the youtube video 'celestial white noise' at high volume.

So relatable. I have lived in my condo for 11 years and recently paid off my mortgage. I figured I'd be here for life because I like(d) it here, and moving is a pain.

However, I recently had new neighbors move in. Husband, wife and their college-aged son. It hasn't even been 2 weeks, but they always seem to be stomping. Perhaps they're getting settled, but I'm already at my wits end. I never heard the previous neighbors walking. They did have area rugs though in the main living spaces and carpet remnants in the bedrooms.

I understand it's a shared living space. I hear their plumbing and the scraping of chairs against the hardwood floor. Heard the same with the previous neighbors. Not sure why people struggle with pulling chairs out properly, but I digress. However, this constant stomping is annoying. They also seem to open drawers, cabinets and closets aggressively.

I'm so over it and want to say something but don't have the courage. :( I would like to move to a townhome, but the market is terrible right now.

Omg, the saw. Grr. I get fast, repetitive tapping, for hours at a time, most days. Once a week, a lady comes over and yells at him, in a foreign language, for 2-3 hours straight. Never hear him yelling back. Sounds like while she's cleaning bc there's intermittent vacuuming and water running.

These are my current upstairs neighbors. They’re very creative. Every now and then when they aren’t pleased with their output levels they drop the heaviest weight an indoor crane can carry and drop it on the floor. Shoutout to all my imaginative neighbors out there, keep those numbers up.

My last upstairs neighbor made so much noise that I actually punched a hole in my living room wall out of anger, overwhelming frustration and sheer exhaustion from not being able to sleep from all the noise. I am NOT the kind of person who loses it and has outward expressions of anger. I'm usually a calm and collected person. They moved out. Thank goodness.

Omg I know this is old but you made me feel seen. I am the nicest and calmest person. I get sad more than I get mad. But my upstairs neighbor has enraged me to the point of physical symptoms and illness. It's nearly impossible to manage the stress. He throws heavy objects on the ground while shouting ”shut the fuck up” at his girlfriend who asks him to be quiet. He blasts rap music all day and night. I never thought I'd be the neighbor to use a broom on the ceiling but I am now because I’ve asked him a million times to not play music during quiet hours (it's in our lease) and he still does it every night. It frustrates me so much that he knows he’s keeping me awake and doesn’t care. I shouldn't have to remind him of quiet hours every night

yes oh my goodness I’m new to this nightmare and it has been just that because wearing earphones all day begins to feel like a prison in your own home but taking them off means you not knowing when they’ll make noise and startle you/make you jump/trigger your anxiety. For me it’s my neighbors stomping. I would luv to know how everyone is dealing with this . I saw a comment that said Boose headphones are good please let me know your thoughts.

Every evening at 10 PM, as I am going to bed, my upstairs neighbours decide it is the best time to start jumping, moving furniture, stomping all over the apartment, banging doors, all the classics. This lasts usually until 1 AM, sometimes longer.
I hate them from the very bottom of my sleep-deprived heart. 😢

Apartments could install sound barriers between floors but they are too cheap ass to do that. Office spaces have a layer built in between floors to trap noise. Why apartments can't do this is beyond common sense.

LOL I got my own house but it's a row house.... The side on the left is completely quiet but the side on the right is a complete disaster. There is a Turkish muslim family there they yell at each other every day and the son is running around the house like a maniac the whole day the daughter is screaming all the time and don't forget about the furnitures that get moved every 30 seconds. Luckily they do sleep around 10 pm precisely every day though but wake up around 7 - 9 am and the noise starts again. Father every morning has to scream for god knows what... All you can do is hope they will some day move out

The worst thing is these are always the neighbors who seem to ALWAYS be at home. Never have a job, kids apparently never go to school. And there's no point in going up and talking to people like this because if they were corteous, considerate people they would already know to walk without stomping, and not to vaccum the floor at 1 AM. So calling police and noise violations is the only approach to such people.

He has the goddamn nerve to flush his toilet a few times a day and take a shower in the morning or sometimes evening. The asshole has a seizure disorder and is always falling then seizing and shaking on his floor. I swear if my chandelier jingles one more time, I'm gonna lose it. You got to love the ones trying to justify or excuse the fact that the noise being heard by the downstairs neighbor is something that should simply be ignored. Lets switch places for a day so you can hear us walk around in our Timberlands. Better yet, let me not reprimand my kid everytime he decides to bolt to and from room to room, or jump up and down repeatedly. And yes, it may not be happening all day. But it sure as hell feels like it. Everyday.

My neighbor above me is passive/aggressive. This is a poorly rehabbed building with wooden floor that creak in high traffic areas. I suffer a PTSD so when the sudden drop of a heavy object is triggering and makes my heart jump. It shakes me to my core. I live in my noise canceling headphones. I have 3 pair. Sometimes the abrupt noise will leak through, but it’s buffered so I don’t get the heart racing reaction. I’m so glad that I will be moving to a more solid concrete building. I’m counting down the days!😖

@@anonymoususer5999 honestly? Meditation is all that worked for me. And earplugs at night. Unless you move out (or they do) there is not much you can do. I think a formal complaint is also possible, you need to talk to your building manager. You can even sue them for making so much noise if it’s starting to affect your mental health.
