The Open is an English Five-piece indie rock band from Liverpool (Steven Bayley (vocals/guitar), Jon Winter (guitar), Jim Reynolds (bass), Roger Westwood (drums) and Alan Dutton (keyboards). Signed to Loog Records after a bidding war the band's first album was released in 2004 and entitled 'The Silent Hours'. Despite critical acclaim (Fly described them as 'Britain's Best New Band' and a mixture of The Cocteau Twins, Talk Talk’s ‘Spirit Of Eden’, The Verve and early U2) the album failed to reach a public more enthralled with the New York Art Rock styling that was popular at the time.
After a dispiriting tour, which saw the band playing smaller venues unsuited to their epic songs, drummer Scott leave and the ending of lead singers Steven Bayley's long term relationship the band entered into the studio to record their second album, 'Statues' which was released on 6th February 2006.
Heavily influenced Miles Davis Jazz and The Who's 'Tommy'-era mini opera's 'Statues' was released to even greater critical acclaim and could find itself a common feature in the upper echelons in this years end of year polls.
They split up in May 2006.
Bring Me Down
The Open Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Cause I've been waiting for a long time now
I've gotta find somewhere to rest
Somewhere to rest my head
Build me up and bring me down
Build me up and bring me down
It's getting harder to be real again
Someone pull me up to get some air
Because I've been feeling so low
Ain't nobody gonna drag me down
Cause im still healing from the last time
Build me up and bring me down
Build me up and bring me down
Build me up and bring me down
Build me up and bring me down
Build me up and bring me down
Build me up and bring me down
The lyrics to The Open's "Bring Me Down" speak to feelings of weariness and the need for support. The singer is at a low point and is looking for someone to "cut the rope" and "get [them] down." They've been waiting a long time, and need to find somewhere to rest their head. Though they're feeling increasingly disconnected from reality, they're still struggling to feel better. The singer acknowledges that they need help, and pleads for someone to "pull [them] up to get some air."
Despite their difficulties, the singer is determined to keep moving forward. They refuse to be dragged down, asserting that they're still healing from whatever the "last time" was. The song's chorus, which repeats the lines "Build me up and bring me down," speaks to the cyclical nature of life. Each time we're knocked down, we have to pick ourselves up again and try to do better. It's a plea for help, but also a statement of resilience.
