The Open is an English Five-piece indie rock band from Liverpool (Steven Bayley (vocals/guitar), Jon Winter (guitar), Jim Reynolds (bass), Roger Westwood (drums) and Alan Dutton (keyboards). Signed to Loog Records after a bidding war the band's first album was released in 2004 and entitled 'The Silent Hours'. Despite critical acclaim (Fly described them as 'Britain's Best New Band' and a mixture of The Cocteau Twins, Talk Talk’s ‘Spirit Of Eden’, The Verve and early U2) the album failed to reach a public more enthralled with the New York Art Rock styling that was popular at the time.
After a dispiriting tour, which saw the band playing smaller venues unsuited to their epic songs, drummer Scott leave and the ending of lead singers Steven Bayley's long term relationship the band entered into the studio to record their second album, 'Statues' which was released on 6th February 2006.
Heavily influenced Miles Davis Jazz and The Who's 'Tommy'-era mini opera's 'Statues' was released to even greater critical acclaim and could find itself a common feature in the upper echelons in this years end of year polls.
They split up in May 2006.

Your hopes and dreams have faded out of sight
How does it feel to be forgotten
How does it feel to be forgotten
You've seen so long from one direction
I think you're better of back where you belong
How does it feel to be forgotten
Repeat x 3
How does it feel to be forgotten
Repeat x 6
The Open's song Forgotten speaks about the feeling of being left out and forgotten by someone. The lyrics convey a sense of hopelessness and despair that comes from being abandoned by someone you once held dear. The opening lines, "There's nothing left to make you feel right, your hopes and dreams have faded out of sight," paint a picture of someone who has lost everything and is struggling to find a way to move forward.
The chorus of the song asks a pointed question, "How does it feel to be forgotten?" The repetition of this question throughout the song conveys the sense of loneliness and desperation that comes with feeling forgotten. The final lines, "You've seen so long from one direction, I think you're better off back where you belong," offer a glimmer of hope that perhaps the forgotten person can find solace in returning to where they come from.
Overall, The Open's Forgotten is a poignant exploration of the theme of abandonment and the pain that comes with feeling forgotten. The lyrics reflect a deep sense of empathy for those who have been cast aside and left to fend for themselves.
