Plateau
The Orb Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now folks, for an old familiar favourite
We've had many requests for this
It's a simple little sentimental song
And I certainly hope all you sentimental folks
Out there are going to enjoy it
Ready fellas? let's go!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Orb's song Plateau start out with an introduction, but it's not clear what the song they're about to play is actually called. The singer addresses the audience ("folks") and says that they've had many requests for this song. They describe it as "a simple little sentimental song," which sets a certain tone. It sounds like the kind of thing that might be played at a wedding or some other warm, fuzzy occasion. The line "I certainly hope all you sentimental folks out there are going to enjoy it" further reinforces this idea.

However, things aren't as straightforward as they seem. Just as the audience is getting settled into the song, it abruptly ends and a different kind of music takes over. This transition is jarring, and it's meant to be. The contrast between the sentimental, melodic opening and the chaotic, dancey middle section is deliberate. It's as if The Orb is saying, "Okay, that was nice, but let's get real now."

sean jackson

this was the last of 3 albums that were done with Kris Weston, he left halfway thru this but he's all over it still. These were classic orb years, esp this album.

Blue LeStrange

Absolutely one of the best albums of the 90s - played tracks off this on my radio show

Jerbo 1

There's only a few albums in that era that have held up over time. This album is timeless. Considering their equipment at the time it's all the more inspiring...

Well said.

The most amazing record to play on repeat through the nights slumber amidst loaded bong sessions and Captain trips to take ya FURTHER than the noise emitting from the deepest sleep.

Little Teapot

This could fit into FFX ost, at the time of playing it I often thought about how this track sounded like a combination of several FFX maps tracks and how pleasing that was to know this came first but could fit in
