Grow
The Originals - 1.03 - Rae Morris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I grow up
I will be tall enough to reach the branches
That I need to reach to climb the trees
You get to climb when you're grown up

And when I grow up
I will be smart enough to answer all the questions that you need to know
The answers to before you're grown up
And when I grow up, I will eat sweets everyday
On the way to work and I will go to bed late every night
And I will wake up when the sun comes up
And I will watch cartoons until my eyes go square
And I won't care 'cause I'll be all grown up
When I grow up

When I grow up, when I grow up, (when I grow up)
I will be strong enough to carry all the heavy things you have to haul around
When you, when you're a grown up

And when I grow up, when I grow up, (when I grow up)
I will be brave enough to fight the creatures that you have to fight beneath the bed
Each night to be a grown up

And when I grow up, (when I grow up)
I will have treats everyday
And I'll play with things that mum pretends that mums don't think are fun
And I will wake up (I will wake up)
When the sun comes up and I will spend all day just lying in the sun
And I won't burn 'cause I'll be all grown up
When I grow up

When I grow up
I will be brave enough to fight the creatures
That you have to fight beneath the bed each night to be a grown up

When I grow up
Just because you find that life's not fair
It doesn't mean that you just have to grin and bear it
If you always take it on the chin and wear it
Nothing will change

When I grow up
Just because I find myself in this story
It doesn't mean that everything is written for me
If I think the ending is fixed already
I might as well be saying

I think that it's ok
And that's not right

Overall Meaning

The song "Grow" by Rae Morris is a whimsical and introspective reflection on the possibilities and potential of growing up. The lyrics speak of a future time when the singer will be able to reach the branches of trees, answer all the questions adults ask, carry heavy things, fight monsters and indulge in sweets and playtime all day long. Morris points out that as children, we think that growing up means freedom to do whatever we want, but once we get there, we can easily become trapped in expectations and limitations.

The first part of the song speaks about the excitement and possibility that we envision for ourselves as kids when we look forward to being grown ups. As we get older, we learn the limitations of the world, but Morris posits that keeping some of that childlike wonder and imagination is important to maintain a sense of joy and freedom in life. In the second half of the song, Morris points out the danger of limiting beliefs about our future and the potential for change in our lives. She inspires listeners to take charge of their own future and not to just accept a fixed ending to their story.

Overall, "Grow" is a hopeful and funny song that encourages listeners to dream big and aim high but also provides a cautionary note to hold onto our childlike wonder and not to give up on our potential for change.

Me too. Well, not a maths teacher - but saw it in 80s as a kiddie and, along with Isaac Asimov science fact books etc., it prompted my lifelong interest in science, astronomy, cosmology. Fantastic. A bit clunky of course.I was looking at the history a while back and see it was inspired by some even clunkier, earlier stuff - "Cosmic View".
