You Cheated
The Orlons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You cheated
You lied
You said that you loved me
You cheated
You lied
You said that you want me
Oh, what can I do?
But just keep on loving you

Love is something
You know nothing about
Love is something
You can't know about
So please try to love me
Love you like I love you
Oh, please try to love me
Love me like I love you

You cheated
You lied
You said that you want me
You cheated
You lied
You said that you loved me

Oh, what can I do?
Oh, what can I do?

Overall Meaning

The Orlons’ song “You Cheated” is a classic tale of love and betrayal. The lyrics tell the story of a heartbroken lover who was deceived by their significant other, who cheated and lied despite promising love and commitment. The first couplet of the song, “You cheated, you lied, you said that you loved me”, lays out the central theme of the song: distrust and deception. The repeated refrain of “oh, what can I do?”, sung with increasing desperation, drives home the feeling of powerlessness that comes when someone is betrayed by the person they love.

The second half of the song is an appeal to the cheating lover to try to understand what real love is, and to reciprocate the emotions of the singer. The lines “Love is something you know nothing about / Love is something you can’t know about” express the singer’s belief that their lover has not truly experienced love, and thus cannot understand how much they are hurting them. The repetition of “please try to love me, love me like I love you” underscores the plea for the cheating lover to at least make an effort to reciprocate the deep love that the singer feels for them.

The song’s catchy melody and rhythm have made it a classic example of the “girl group” sound that was popular in the early 1960s. The harmonies between the female vocalists give the song a dreamy, ethereal quality that contrasts with the sadness and anger of the lyrics. The repetitive lyrics and simple melody make the song easy to sing along to and have contributed to its enduring popularity.
