Puppy Love
The Osmonds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And they called it puppy love
Oh, I guess they'll never know
How a young heart really feels
And why I love her so

And they called it puppy love
Just because we're in our teens
Tell them all, please tell them it isn't fair
To take away my only dream

I cry each night my tears for you
My tears are all in vain
I'll hope and I'll pray that maybe someday
You'll be back in my arms once again

Someone, help me, help me, help me please
Is the answer up above
How can I, oh how can I tell them
This is not a puppy love

Someone, help me, help me, help me please
Is the answer up above

How can I, oh how can I tell them
This is not a puppy love, not a puppy love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Osmonds's song "Puppy Love" tells the story of a young person in love and how people perceive their feelings. The song is about teenage love and how it's often dismissed as a fleeting infatuation or a "puppy love." The first verse expresses how the singer's feelings are not understood by others when they say "they called it puppy love." The singer is expressing that no one understands how they truly feel, and that their feelings are not just a passing fancy.

The chorus reiterates this point, with the singer stating that people only see them as teenagers in love, and it's not fair to take away their only dream. The second verse reveals the singer's despair, they cry each night for their loved one and hope and pray that they'll be together again soon. The bridge is the singer asking for help in expressing their true feelings because everyone is stuck with the same "puppy love" label, and no one is taking them seriously.

The song is about the pain of being in love, but the way it is perceived by society. It is a common experience for teenagers to feel like they are not being taken seriously, especially when it comes to matters of the heart. "Puppy Love" is a timeless song that speaks to that universal feeling of wanting to be heard and understood.

I have never understood this kind of prejudice. Music is music. It has no race. Either you like it or you don't. From what I remember, which is pretty damn much, both family groups were admired by everyone, no matter the race. They were both excellent. MJ and Donnie were on the cover of Tiger Beat magazine every damn month. A lot of us had the posters from them on our walls. Along with David Cassidy (R.I.P) and Bobby Sherman.

Several years ago, I started introducing my SO to Journey. Where he grew up, men/boys didn't listen to them. I grew up in the SF Bay Area. They were a local group. I tell him we just shared them with the world. ;-D He now admires them.

The SF Bay Area had hit singers, musicians and groups from all sides of the bay, including The Pointer Sisters from Oakland. We even had our own music awards. Look it up. Look up Day on the Green. That was in Oakland, at the coliseum. Bill Graham was a genius at putting concerts together. People came from all over the world to them. IF they could get tickets. Usually, we (the locals) bought them up as soon as they were announced.

My first love died just a few days ago, just days short of his 60th birthday and this was one of our songs we would listen to while sitting on the swings in the back yard holding hands and kissing. Such sweet memories
