I Can
The Outlaws Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So you're leaving
In the morning
On the early train
I could say everything's alright
I could pretend and say good bye

Got your ticket
Got your suitcase
Got your leaving smile

I could say that's the way it goes
I could pretend and you won't know
That I was lying
'Cause I can't stop loving you
I can't stop loving you
No, I can't stop loving you

Though I try
Took a taxi
To the station
Not a word was said
I saw you walk across the road
Maybe the last time, I don't know

Feeling humble
I heard a rumble
On the railway track
And when I hear the whistle blow
I walk away and you don't know

That I was lying
'Cause I can't stop loving you
No, I can't stop loving you
I can't stop loving you
Though I try

'Cause I can't stop loving you
I can't stop loving you

No, I can't stop loving you
Though I try

Overall Meaning

The Outlaws' "I Can't Stop Loving You" is a poignant ballad about a man who can't let go of his lover. In the first verse, the man recognizes that his lover is leaving on the early train, but he doesn't want to say the final goodbye. He acknowledges that he could lie and pretend that everything is alright, but he can't bring himself to do it. He has a realization that his love for her is stronger than his efforts to move on.

In the second verse, the man accompanies his lover to the station but doesn't say a word. He watches her walk across the road, thinking that it might be the last time he sees her. Suddenly, he hears a rumble on the railway track and realizes that her train is leaving. He hears the whistle blow and walks away, unable to stop loving her, even though he has tried.

The chorus repeats the central theme of the song - the man's inability to stop loving his departed lover, despite his efforts to do so. The heartfelt lyrics and gentle melody combine to create a moving tribute to a love that cannot be forgotten.

@MarkAYeast

I have searched for this song for years. It has to be one of my most favorite Songs, but only by this group. Phil Collins and all the others could never bring the feelings that this Group does

@fpereira77

I don't know if you know it, but you should check out the first released version of this music, by Leo Sayer. Phil Collin's versions was obviously the first I heard, but I really liked Sayer's version

@Mrmercuzio1

Right. I can't deny that Phil's version is well sung, but this by The outlaws is superior

@charlesreed6780
