I held you, held you tight
'Cause I love, love you so
Promise I'll never let you go
In the still of the night
I remember that night in May
The stars were bright above
I hope and I pray to keep
Your precious love
Well before the light
Hold me again
With all of your might
In the still of the night
So before the light
Hold me again
With all of your might
In the still of the night
In the still of the night
, The Overtones's lyrics evoke a sense of a romantic moment shared between two deeply connected individuals. The song's opening line establishes the setting, the stillness of the night, which is a common trope for creating an intimate atmosphere. The holding of the person tight with a promise affirms the singer's love for the person being sung to. The line "I remember that night in May" creates a sense of nostalgia and reflection, implying that the couple has been together for a while. The mention of stars in the first verse furthers the romantic theme of the song by conjuring images of a starry evening, which is representative of dreams, aspirations, and the future.
The repetition of the phrase "In the still of the night" throughout the song conveys a sense of intimacy and connection between the couple. It serves as a chorus that reminds the listener of the emotional and romantic bond the two individuals share. The final lines of the song repeat the sentiment of holding on to each other with all their might, further emphasizing the strength of their love.
