Young
The Paper Kites Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We only wake 'cause our eyes are open
Open so wide we walk in the dark
Trying so hard to keep what we're losing
Using our feet to show them the movements

And they wake up, and they go out
Head in a cloud
We were like them before we were older
Just like they're grow to be as we are
And still only speak with wording of caution
Sow and we reap what we're putting forward

And they wake up, and they go out
Head in a cloud

We can look down, see what we were
Shaking our fingers and using our words
We're all awake; we don't go out
Head in a cloud

Rush goes to the head it's all perception
I know, even so we all need time to grow

Overall Meaning

The Paper Kites's song "Young" is a reflection on the cycle of life and the fleeting nature of youth. The lyrics speak to the idea that as we grow older and become more aware of the world around us, we begin to lose the innocence and wonder of our younger days. The opening lines, "We only wake 'cause our eyes are open, Open so wide we walk in the dark," suggest that as children we are fearless and curious about the unknown, but as we get older, we become more guarded and hesitant.

The chorus, "And they wake up, and they go out, Head in a cloud," highlights the idea that many people live their lives on autopilot, without truly engaging in the world around them. The verses suggest that we have a responsibility to nurture and guide the younger generations, but also warns that we, too, will inevitably grow old and lose touch with the youthful spirit that once filled us.

The bridge, "We can look down, see what we were, Shaking our fingers and using our words, We're all awake; we don't go out, Head in a cloud," speaks to the idea that even though we may have lost some of our youthful energy, we still have the power to reflect on our past and offer guidance to those who are still learning and growing. The final line, "Rush goes to the head it's all perception, I know, even so we all need time to grow," suggests that although we may feel rushed or pressured to grow up too quickly, it's important to remember that life is a journey and we all need time to learn and mature at our own pace.

Overall, "Young" is a poignant and melodic reminder that as we grow older, we should strive to hold onto the wonder and curiosity of our youth, while also using our experience and wisdom to guide and inspire the generations that will follow us.

Imagine if we did a music video like this and somehow got a picture of everyone in the world and we all try desparately to pause it and see our friends and family's faces. I feel like that'd be so cool. You could even go from youngest to oldest and show the whole world slowly aging through every person. Lol. Obviously couldn't happen but just imagine. 💗

At 24 fps, the video would be almost 10 years long.

Not only is the music beautiful and the video as a whole is *beautiful*, but does anyone else think that these people are beautiful in their own way? Maybe it’s something about the number of people there are here, contributing towards a common project. Makes me imagine they share an interest in the paper kites. These people could be any one of us watching. I don’t know. It’s hard to put into words, but I think this is a very calm form of art, and calm just washes over me while I watch and listen :)
