I Woke Up In Love This Morning
The Partridge Family Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Last night, I turned out the light,
lay down and thought about you.
I tho't about the way that it could be.
Two o'clock, wond'rin' what I'm doin' here alone without you.
So, I close my eyes and dream you here to me.

And I woke up in love this mornin'.
I woke up in love this mornin'.
Went to sleep with you on my mind.
I woke up in love this mornin'.
I woke up in love this mornin'.
Went to sleep with you on my mind.

Hello girl, yes, its five o'clock,
I know, but just you listen.
There's something that I've got to let you know.
This is you, this pillow that I'm hugging and I'm kissing.
And one more thing before I let you go.

And I woke up in love this mornin'.
I woke up in love this mornin'.
Went to sleep with you on my mind.
I woke up in love this mornin'.
I woke up in love this mornin'.
Went to sleep with you on my mind.

Do dreams come true?
Well, if they do,
I'll have you not for just a night,
but for my whole life through.
Oh, I woke up in love this mornin'.
I woke up in love this mornin'.
Went to sleep with you on my mind.

I woke up in love this mornin'.
Oh, I woke up in love this mornin'.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Partridge Family's "I Woke Up in Love This Morning" describe the singer's longing for someone they love throughout the night. They turn off the lights, get into bed, and can only think about the person they're yearning for. The chorus, "I woke up in love this morning, went to sleep with you on my mind," is about waking up with the same longing feelings as they had before they went to bed. The singer then calls their lover in the early hours of the morning to tell them about their dreams and how they feel about them. They ask the question "do dreams come true?" and end the song by singing "Oh, I woke up in love this morning" once more, expressing their persistent feelings for the object of their affection.

The lyrics of "I Woke Up in Love This Morning" are fairly straightforward and easy to understand, as they describe a simple story of longing and love. However, the song has a special place in music history, as it was one of the most successful hits of The Partridge Family, a popular American television show and musical group in the early 1970s. The show followed a family of musicians played by real-life siblings Shirley Jones and David Cassidy, and each episode featured a new original song performed by the band. "I Woke Up in Love This Morning" was released in 1971 and became one of their most popular hits, ranking #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

2022 and I'm 60 years old. If I close my eyes and listen to this music I can transport myself right back to 1971. 10 years old, the world felt so innocent, so safe. Living for Friday nights, The Partridge Family and mostly for David Cassidy.
Ugh to go back....if only for one day....
