THAT
The Party Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Guitar thug blew into town
His eyes like wheels spinnin' round
Jerkin-off at every sound
Layin' all his crosses down
O yeah
He got Six Strings
The Six Strings that drew blood

The bar is full of Holy-Joes
A Holy-hole-a-whole-aria
Around the neck of our consumptive rose
Is the root of all his sorrows
O yeah
He got Six Strings
Six Strings that drew blood
A Holy-hole-a-whole-aria
Six Strings that drew blood

In the bathroom under cover
He turns on one tap to discover
He's smashed his teeth out on the other
Well he look in the mirror and say
Don't fuck me brother
Cause I got Six Strings
Six Strings that drew blood

Numbin' the runt of reputation they call rat fame
Top-E as a tourniquet
A low tune whistles across his grave
Forever the master and the slave of his Six Strings
A Holy-hole-a-whole-aria
Six Strings that drew blood.

Overall Meaning

The Party's song THAT is a bleak portrayal of a guitar player who has descended into a cycle of addiction and self-destruction. The first verse introduces the unnamed protagonist as a "Guitar thug" who has "Six Strings" that "drew blood," possibly implying that his obsession with playing the guitar is causing him physical harm. His "eyes like wheels spinnin' round" suggest a frenzied state of mind, while his "Jerkin-off at every sound" could imply that he is constantly playing his guitar, or perhaps that he has developed a sexual fetish related to the instrument. The line "Layin' all his crosses down" could be a reference to his abandonment of any morals or values he previously held, or perhaps that he is literally sacrificing himself to his addiction.

The second verse describes a bar full of "Holy-Joes" and a "consumptive rose," suggesting that the singer is surrounded by religious imagery but is sick and dying inside. The line "Six Strings that drew blood" is repeated as a refrain, hammering home the idea that his devotion to the guitar is causing him harm. In the third verse, he smashes his teeth in the bathroom and warns himself in the mirror not to let his addiction consume him further. The final lines of the song describe him as a "master and the slave of his Six Strings," suggesting that he is both in control of and completely powerless to resist his addiction.

One thing good about disco was that people energetically danced which was aerobic and I suppose was better than standing around drinking.

Well done. I've read Alice Echols book and between that and this doc, have the rearview historical view I've been seeking. I was there. In that moment of time, as a teen in NYC getting my groove on in the club, I had no awareness of the sociocultural implications that this was a "movement." Of course, all individual lives cover periods of history. In reflection, now in my early 60s, I view that time in a broader, historical context, which I find interesting, intriguing and ripe for further exploration, perhaps in fiction. All that said, my clubbing years from the mid to late 70s were MAGNIFICENT!! I had so much fun. And I have so many wonderful memories of the time before the scene went mainstream crazy with greed and produced atrocities like Disco Duck.

This is not a movie It is a documentary on disco !

Fonda Sanford

It was a place for energetic dance, strobe lights, exotic dressing, sweaty, alcohol, drug’s, people looking for a partner of sorts. Disco was very sexual (a programming)... like many thing’s in this world, definitely international friendly. Most romantic and sexual music is a form of idol worship. Yes.. you can literally worship someone. I lived in this era.
