The Passions' song "Gloria" is a heart-wrenching ballad about unrequited love. The chorus repeats the name "Gloria" several times, suggesting that this person is on the singer's mind quite frequently. However, the first few lines of the song make it clear that this protagonist is mistaken. He seems to think that Gloria might be Marie or Sherie, but the repetition of "It's not Marie" and "It's not Sherie" tells us that he is wrong.
The singer is clearly pining for Gloria and hopes that she might love him back someday. But he is also uncertain and hesitant, with lines such as "How am I supposed to know?" and "But how am I to know" suggesting that he doesn't want to get his hopes up too high. Ultimately, the song ends on a despondent note, with the repetition of "She's not in love with me" driving home the singer's sadness.
Overall, this song is a poignant meditation on the pain of unrequited love, with its simple melody and heartfelt lyrics capturing the feeling perfectly.
