People
The Pete King Chorale And Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here we are, two sleepy people

Wake up, Ginny Simms
Wake up, Harry Babbitt
Come on here, chil'en
Let's have a little harmony

Here we are, out of cigarettes
Holding hands and yawning, look how late it gets

Two sleepy people by dawn's early light
And too much in love to say goodnight

Yes, here we are
In a cozy chair
Pickin' on a wishbone
From the frigid air

Two sleepy people with nothing to say
And too much in love to break away

Do you remember the nights we had to linger in the hall
Now my father didn't like you at all (you're telling me)
Do you remember the reason why we married in the fall?
To rent this little nest and get a bit of rest

Well here we are, just about the same
Foggy little fella
And a drowsy little dame

Two sleepy people by dawn's early light
And too much in love to say goodnight

Two sleepy people by dawn's early light
And too much in love to say goodnight

Ho hum, ho hum
Too much in love to say goodnight

Overall Meaning

The Pete King Chorale and Orchestra's song "People" is a beautiful ballad that tells the story of two people who are deeply in love but are too tired to say goodnight. In the first verse, the singers urge Ginny Simms and Harry Babbitt to wake up and join them for a little harmony. The second verse describes the two sleepy people who are out of cigarettes, holding hands and yawning, and realizing how late it is. They are too much in love to say goodnight despite the time.

The third verse reflects on the past, where the two lovers had to linger in the hall and faced disapproval from the girl's father. They got married to rent a little nest and get some rest. In the final verse, they are still the same, a foggy little fellow, and a drowsy little dame. They are too sleepy to break away from each other and still too much in love to say goodnight. The song portrays a beautiful picture of love that can endure the test of time, even in the midst of exhaustion.

Real voices and instruments...what's not to like.

I grew up with this album, and I'm 65 years old now. My parents bought it when it first came out. It is my family's quintessential memory of Christmas. Mom and dad are gone now but every year we pull out our scratchy LP and play it, and it's like mom and dad are with us. I'm glad we can turn to YouTube now and play it at our gatherings. Thank you for posting this. You have no idea what it means to us.

I grew up listening to this. My parents divorced and the album disappeared. When I was in my 30's full blown pregnant sitting on an antique store floor going through thousands of records and I found it, in perfect condition for $1.00...I play it every year, had it digitized and gave one to all my siblings.
