Totally agree, but being every bit the producer that he was drummer and singer, you know Phil Collins wouldn’t put up with anything less than the best, AND he would have insisted further that all those mics and direct boxes were split, and one set was sent to a reinforcement engineer who handled the house mix for the room, and the other set went to another mixer in an isolated room, or even set up in a van or trailer parked outside with a different sound engineer listening over a set of hyper-accurate studio monitor speakers, and whose sole responsibility was the mix that was going on the recording, and whatever one did, it had absolutely no effect whatsoever on what the other did. What makes a great sounding house mix coming out of the speakers in the room, might make a terrible recording, and the mix for the recording if duplicated on the reinforcement mixer might produce runaway feedback that would clear the room. So many people think you can just record the house mix and expect it to sound just as good as it sounded to the audience, only to discover that it was so bad it is useless.

The drum fill at 17:55 is just perfect. Ya just hit the climax through the key change, and ol' Phil says "No, no, we got some more coming". The fill is no more or no less than is required. It's dead nuts, spot on, perfectly executed. Syncopation holds you in the anticipation of being ever so delicately dropped back into the buttery froth of sax that awaits.

@c murphy all transitions, arrangements, etc were copied from AWB. Steve Ferrone drums circles around Phil Collins! Best version is when AWB was invited to the 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival to perform and be the backing house band for several other artists during festival. Just put "The Atlantic Family Live" in the search box and the uncut 28 minute version will pop up...then you'll see what's really up...AWB and the Atlantic Family of horn players are beasts!!!

Rock solid Phil Collins always loved jazz (and R&B). In his solo concert shows he had a lot of jazz elements. In fact Gerald Albright (alto sax) often toured with Collins! Phil played with Brand X, a jazz/fusion band in the mid-'70s (in between his Genesis gigs). The man was a workhorse besides being insanely talented!

The AWB had great melody as well as rhythms and beats, also the individual players had great parts incorporated into each song, so grandstanding wasn't required as everybody gets to shine.

This is great. You can really hear the swing in Phil's drumming. He is no slouch but now go and listen to Steve Ferrone lay it down it with the AWB or the Buddy Rich big band. Makes you realise just how good a drummer Ferrone is.

This is not a competition, it is a collaborative of contributions..Each performance, a piece of the whole. Each individual piece is a part of the collective SOUL ! Inspired by each other, each of these greats have reached the stratosphere to find and land in the groove. They have laid the groove down for the others...cutting that groove deeper and deeper as they have literally, laid down the pieces for the next one to "PICK UP THE PIECES' .That's the beauty of this piece, and in particular, this arrangement, expressed soulfully by these masters of the funk!
