The group was formed in 2011 in St. George, Utah, United States. They became famous through YouTube, where they posted videos of renditions and mashups of popular songs accompanied by professional-looking video shots. Over one million people subscribe to their Youtube channel.
In December 2011, they released their first album, titled YouTube Hits, Vol. 1. Their second album, The Piano Guys, reached number one on the Billboard New Age Albums and Classical Albums charts in 2012.

2:53 After so many years, this is still my favourite piece from The Piano Guys. The break here with the change in arrangement and the unexpected visual of a painist playing a grand piano and a cellist playing a cello on an open platform on a train traveling across a beautiful landscape never fails to astound me. The music, the visuals and the arrangement just worked so incredibly well together. I am just awed that the production was so polished when this was still a "hobby" thing.
