Crazy monkey woman, why you always coming to me
I said sweet freaky lady, why you always got another to say

You are my only regret why to love you once again

I don't give a damn about my life, 'cause I'm all fucked up again.
But I keep 2 steps ahead of you, with a steady diet, I try to get trim.

I'm a freight train rolling, busting through your house now
I'm a freight train coming, so you'd better watch out now

Overall Meaning

The Pietasters’ song, Crazy Monkey Woman, is about a woman who is constantly seeking the attention of the singer. The title "Crazy Monkey Woman" is used to express how wild and unpredictable the woman is. The singer tries to distance themselves from her, but she always comes back with another issue to discuss. The singer refers to her as a “sweet freaky lady,” potentially implying that she is charming in some ways but also unstable. The refrain “You are my only regret why to love you once again” suggests that the singer has a complicated relationship with the woman. They regret loving her but cannot help but fall back in love with her.

The second half of the song’s lyrics are focused on the singer expressing their self-destructive tendencies. The line “I don't give a damn about my life, 'cause I'm all fucked up again” suggests that the singer has some sort of substance abuse problem. However, they keep pushing forward and trying to improve themselves with a “steady diet” and an attempt to “get trim”. The song ends with the refrain repeated six times, potentially symbolizing that the singer is trapped in this cycle of self-destruction and an unhealthy relationship.

Dead

on Set Me Up

The song is about former DC mayor, Marion Barry.

On January 18, 1990, Barry was arrested with a former girlfriend, Hazel Diane Moore, in a sting operation at the Vista International Hotel by the FBI and D.C. police for crack cocaine use and possession. Moore was an FBI informant when she invited Barry to the hotel room and insisted that he smoke freebase cocaine before they had sex, while agents in another room watched on camera, waiting for Barry to accept her offer. During the videotaped arrest, Barry says of Moore, "Bitch set me up.”
