Drinkin' And Drivin'
The Pietasters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Half past five, I'm in the pub Six o'clock it's home for grub Eight o'clock its back to the bar Fuck the walk, ill take my car

(chorus: Knock it back, I'll have another one, drinkin' and drivin' is so much fun. Knock it back I'll have another one, drinkin' and drivin' is so much fun)

You, me, and the time to roam Don't forget the highway code Keep your head on, keep your cool Must avoid the right phone pole

(chorus)
In the motor, off you go Not too fast and not too slow See a spot and take your pick Out of the car door to be sick.

(chorus) x3

Overall Meaning

The Pietasters' song "Drinkin' And Drivin'" is a commentary on the reckless and dangerous behavior many people engage in by driving under the influence of alcohol. The lyrics describe a typical night out, where the singer starts drinking early in the evening and then proceeds to drive home and back to the bar later in the night. The chorus reinforces the idea that drinking and driving is somehow enjoyable and encourages the listener to continue drinking and driving despite the obvious risks.

The second verse provides a cautionary note, with the suggestion that the driver should remember the highway code and avoid crashing into any obstacles. However, the reckless behavior continues in the third verse, with the driver vomiting out of the car door. The song's message is clear: drinking and driving is foolish and dangerous, and can have serious and deadly consequences. The upbeat ska music that accompanies the lyrics creates an ironic contrast with the song's somber message, making the song a powerful commentary on the dangers of drinking and driving.

on Set Me Up

The song is about former DC mayor, Marion Barry.

On January 18, 1990, Barry was arrested with a former girlfriend, Hazel Diane Moore, in a sting operation at the Vista International Hotel by the FBI and D.C. police for crack cocaine use and possession. Moore was an FBI informant when she invited Barry to the hotel room and insisted that he smoke freebase cocaine before they had sex, while agents in another room watched on camera, waiting for Barry to accept her offer. During the videotaped arrest, Barry says of Moore, "Bitch set me up.”
