Maggie Mae
The Pietasters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a place where we all go to have a few when we feel low Drink ourselves into a state, drown our sorrow and fuel our hate A bar maid beauty in a tight black dress pours our beer and cleans our mess Answers to the name of Maggie Mae, wait'll we see her what'll we say?
Maggie Mae bring us another beer we need another beer Take away our troubles, dear Maggie Mae bring us another beer we need another beer Take away our troubles, dear
There's a place where we all go to have a few when we feel low Been laid off, we've been laid in, we've been locked out we've been kicked in A bar maid beauty in a tight black dress pours our beer and cleans our mess Answers to the name of Maggie Mae, wait'll we see her what'll we say?
Maggie Mae bring us another beer we need another beer Take away our troubles, dear Maggie Mae bring us another beer we need another beer Take away our troubles, dear Bring us another beer
There's a girl that we all love, she's the one we're thinkin' of Answers to the name of Maggie Mae, wait'll we see her what'll we say?
Maggie Mae bring us another beer we need another beer Take away our troubles, dear Maggie Mae bring us another beer we need another beer Take away our troubles, dear Bring us another beer
There's a girl that we all love, she's the one we're thinkin' of Answers to the name of Maggie Mae, wait'll we see her what'll we say?
Maggie Mae bring us another beer we need another beer Take away our troubles, dear Maggie Mae bring us another beer we need another beer Take away our troubles, dear Maggie Mae bring us another beer we need another beer Take away our troubles, dear Maggie Mae bring us another beer we need another beer Take away our troubles, dear

Overall Meaning

The Pietasters's song "Maggie Mae" reflects on the universal experience of seeking solace and companionship in a bar when feeling down. The lyrics describe the characters entering a bar to drown their sorrows and fuel their hate, and the barmaid, Maggie Mae, who serves them drinks and provides comfort. The repeated plea for "another beer" serves not only as a request for a drink but perhaps as a cry for more time in this safe space, away from the difficulties of life. Maggie Mae represents a figure of hope and escape from hardship, providing a temporary escape from the struggles of day-to-day life.

There is a strong emotional connection between the lyrics and the ska punk sound of the Pietasters, blending melancholy and joy into an upbeat sound. The catchy melody and upbeat rhythm of the song contrast with the underlying sadness and despair of the characters' situation, which highlights the essential, healing aspect of being in a community.

Overall, the lyrics of "Maggie Mae" are a poignant insight into the universal human experience of seeking comfort and community in a bar, embodied by the character of Maggie Mae.

on Set Me Up

The song is about former DC mayor, Marion Barry.

On January 18, 1990, Barry was arrested with a former girlfriend, Hazel Diane Moore, in a sting operation at the Vista International Hotel by the FBI and D.C. police for crack cocaine use and possession. Moore was an FBI informant when she invited Barry to the hotel room and insisted that he smoke freebase cocaine before they had sex, while agents in another room watched on camera, waiting for Barry to accept her offer. During the videotaped arrest, Barry says of Moore, "Bitch set me up.”
