New Breed
The Pietasters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well gather around girls, and take a look at me,
'Cause I got something that you gotta see

CHORUS

You can call me for whatever you need,
I was a part of the new breed
Part of the brand new breed
I got 2 strong arms, which used to hold you tight
I got some good love, and it's outta sight

CHORUS

Hey now mama, now let me be a man
'Cause I got a thing going, fed up, and hold up your act, hey
You make the sunshine, up from the pouring rain,
'Cause I got the power, to do anything

CHORUS

Hey now mama, now let me be a man
'Cause I got a thing going, fed up, and hold up your act, hey
You make the ships sail, on the job my them.
'Cause I got the power, to do anything

CHORUS

Overall Meaning

The Pietasters’ song “New Breed” is about a man who is confident in his abilities to succeed in love and life. The lyrics are directed towards women, as the lead singer proclaims that he has something that they all need to see. He describes himself as part of the new breed, suggesting that he is part of a new generation of men who are more assertive and self-assured. This newfound confidence is expressed through the repetition of the chorus, in which he states that he can be called for anything, as he is indeed part of the “brand new breed.”

The second verse has the singer speaking directly to a specific woman, asking her to let him be a man and showing off his ability to handle anything life throws at him. on Set Me Up

The song is about former DC mayor, Marion Barry.

On January 18, 1990, Barry was arrested with a former girlfriend, Hazel Diane Moore, in a sting operation at the Vista International Hotel by the FBI and D.C. police for crack cocaine use and possession. Moore was an FBI informant when she invited Barry to the hotel room and insisted that he smoke freebase cocaine before they had sex, while agents in another room watched on camera, waiting for Barry to accept her offer. During the videotaped arrest, Barry says of Moore, "Bitch set me up.”
