Dead in the Water
The Pineapple Thief Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One day, the last day, it was beauty to hold,
Take back, I would take back, I would claw back,
What they stole

Hold on just a little bit longer,
Just hold on just a little bit longer,
I hold you ,when you?re dead in the water,
I hold you, when you?re dead in the water.

Cry out, just you cry out,
Will they answer, your call,
Sense of, make some sense of,
Just don?t try me, at all

Hold on just a little bit longer,
Just hold on just a little bit longer,
I hold you ,when you?re dead in the water,
I hold you, when you?re dead in the water.

There is nobody else my love,
There is nobody else my love,
There is no other place, to die,
There is no other place, to die,

Except for my arms?

Except for my arms?

My arms?

Except for my arms?

Except for, except for, except for, my arms,
Except for, except for, except for, my arms,
Except for, except for, except for, my arms,
Except for, except for, except for, my arms

Except for, except for, except for, my arms

Overall Meaning

The Pineapple Thief's song Dead in the Water is a poignant and emotive piece that speaks of holding on to someone even when they are struggling or lost. The song starts with an appreciation of beauty that was temporary and unable to last. The singer laments and seeks to take back what had been taken from them. The chorus emphasizes the need to hold on, even when things look bleak or hope appears elusive. The singer wants to console someone who is facing difficulties and is there to hold them when they feel like they are drowning.

The second verse speaks of seeking answers, but feeling like it may be futile. The singer wants to make sense of the situation but acknowledges that trying too hard might not help. The chorus is repeated again, strengthening the message of holding on even when everything seems hopeless. Finally, the song concludes with an affirmation of love and the importance of being present, communicating how there is nowhere else they would rather be than holding onto their loved one in their arms.

Overall, Dead in the Water is a song that speaks to our deepest insecurities and fears, acknowledging the pain we all feel when we struggle. It is a reminder that we all need someone to hold on to when we feel like we are drowning.

Impressive how well Gavin Harrison fit into this great band

@thekitchenfreak

Floored. Reliving this song today, the first track from the album that got me into TPT… half the elements familiar, half the elements a draft of fresh air. The mix is ironically the best TPT mix that I’ve heard. Gavin’s drum sound has always been gorgeous, but this is even at a high er level… Jon’s bass presence also... and hearing Bruce sing « There is nobody else… » 16 years later… a pristine and mature delivery. Oh, and alternating 5/8 and 6/8… very cool.

Little Man is such a deep and personal album and I’m glad they are revisiting it. Will never replace the original (and that’s not the goal), but pays a damn good tribute to it. Now I can’t wait to hear what they will do with the fragile title track… such a delicate song to rework…

Awesome awesome job. I wished for this to happen and I am overexcited!

@martrinshyde

Gav breathes such life into songs. Fantastic Mr H!

@Aenigmakil

Do you find the original versions rather dead?

@shantanunathan

If I'm not wrong, this is the first time I've heard Gavin play a shuffle-like groove across any Porcupine Tree or Pineapple Thief song.

@ViktorKralovic

Convinced. What a new VIBE! Can't wait to listen to the rest. Nice work guys.

@SK-vd7ef

Gavin Harrison for me the best Drummer of this era has the unique gift to make a mediocre band to a great band, see the porcupine tree, saw them a few years ago in Amsterdam, mindblowing, Bruce Soord great voice, Gavin awesome drummer, must see band live if you ever have the chance

@Aenigmakil

Which band was mediocre?

@mistahnice

Absolutely love the remasters with Gav. Thanks for taking the time to redo some classics. Cheers, an old fan.
