Give It Back
The Pineapple Thief Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look
What you've done
Won't you look at me
Just once?

So take it
And sit back
And I'll forfeit
What we had

And I will give it back to you
Yeah, I will give it back to you

Just give me
A little love
The little promises
For what it's worth

So take it
And sit back
I have nothing
Of what I had

And I will give it back to you
And I will give it back to you

What do you want me to say?

I will give it
I will give it
I will give it back
I will give it back
I will give it back
I will give it back

I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you

I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you

I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you

I'm gonna give it back to you
I'm gonna give it back to you
I'm gonna give it back to you
I'm gonna give it back to you

What do you want me to say?
You want me the first time I touched you?
You want to feel that again?
You want to feel that again?

I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you

I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you
I will give it back to you

I'm gonna give it back to you
I'm gonna give it back to you
I'm gonna give it back to you
I'm gonna give it back to you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Pineapple Thief's song "Give It Back" convey a sense of longing and remorse for what has been lost. The opening lines "Look what you've done, won't you look at me just once?" suggest that the singer feels ignored or forgotten by the person they are addressing. They go on to plead "Just give me a little love, the little promises, for what it's worth", indicating that they are seeking some form of affection or reassurance.

The chorus repeats the line "And I will give it back to you" several times, implying that the singer is willing to return something to the other person. This could be their own love and affection, or perhaps something more tangible like a possession or a shared experience. The repetition of the phrase could also be seen as an attempt to convince the other person that they are sincere in their desire to reconcile.

The final verse adds another layer of complexity to the lyrics, with the singer asking "You want me the first time I touched you? You want to feel that again?" This could be interpreted as a reference to a past romantic relationship, with the singer longing for a return to the intimacy and connection they once shared. Overall, "Give It Back" is a song about regret, longing, and the desire to make things right.

Lord, we thank thee today for the gift of a nice, thick basstone.

What only a drummer can do to a band. Amazing

@MikeLoux

We need to let Gavin rework whatever song he wants from any band, ever. This is brilliant.

I feel like I stepped into a parallel universe where Give It Back was written for Versions of the Truth instead of for All The Wars, this was like hearing the song for the first time again!! Very cool!!

The first album of yours I listened to was the Introducing The Pineapple Thief album and Give It Back was my favorite on the album, and All The Wars has become a favorite album of mine. Hearing the restructured song with Gavin’s incredible drum parts is amazing, I had the same feeling when hearing the other older songs in the Nothing But The Truth livestream (especially Warm Seas and Wretched Soul). Can’t wait to hear what other songs you’re making new versions of!!

So looking forward to their show in Portland OR late May. This will be the second time I've seen them . As with the previous show, I will take a friend that is new to the band and watch their jaw drop.
