Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
The Platters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
I of course replied
Something here inside cannot be denied
They said "someday you'll find all who love are blind"
When your heart's on fire,
You must realize, smoke gets in your eyes

So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away,
I am without my love

Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes

(Smoke gets in your eyes, smoke gets in your eyes)

Smoke gets in your eyes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Platters' iconic song, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, describe the pain of losing a loved one and the difficulty of moving on. The song begins with the singer being asked how they knew their love was true, to which they replied that they could not deny the feeling inside themselves. Others mocked their belief, telling them that love makes people blind. However, the singer knew their heart was on fire with love. They then describe how they chaffed and laughed at those who doubted their love, but now that their love has flown away, they find themselves without their love.

The second verse describes how the singer's friends now mock their tears, causing them to smile and say that when a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes. This line evokes the image of smoke rising from the ashes of a fire, representing the pain and sadness that lingers after a great love has ended. The song ends with the title line, "smoke gets in your eyes," repeated twice, emphasizing the lingering pain and emotional damage caused by lost love.

Overall, the lyrics to Smoke Gets in Your Eyes are a poignant and powerful depiction of the pain of lost love. The image of smoke is used effectively to both symbolize the passion and intensity of love and the sadness and grief that follow its loss.

I am. I'm 67. I had a sister who was 17 years older than me. She had Platters albums. When she married and left home, she left her albums behind. I would listen to them over and over. I loved those songs as a little child and to this day, I get a thrill when I hear them. Thanks Sissy for turning me on to such great music.

My parents and most of their generation are gone but the wonderful music of their era was gifted to us as a timeless echo of their presence.
