Tuesday Morning
The Pogues Lyrics

Too many Tuesday mornings
I thought of you today
I wished it was yesterday morning
I thought of you today
And I dreamt you were dressed in mourning
But I knew that you
With your heart beating and your eyes shining
Lying with you on a Tuesday morning
I fell through the window
And I found out I was still breathing
I thought of tomorrow
And the fear that you might leave me
I thought of tomorrow
And I wished it was Monday evening
But I knew that you
With your heart beating and your eyes shining
Would be dreaming of me
Lying with you on a Tuesday morning
Turn your face from me
I will cover myself with sorrow
Bring Hell down upon me
I will surrender my heart to sorrow
Bring Hell down upon me
And I will say goodbye tomorrow
'Cause I know that you
With your heart beating and your eyes shining
Would be dreaming of me
Lying with you on a Tuesday morning
I know that you
With your heart beating and your eyes shining
Would be dreaming of me
Lying with you on a Tuesday morning
The Pogues’ song Tuesday Morning is a poignant reflection on the passing of time and the unrelenting nature of sadness. The opening lyrics convey a sense of weariness and despair - "Too many sad days, too many Tuesday mornings" - suggesting an unending cycle of gloom and hopelessness. The singer then thinks of a loved one - "I thought of you today, I wished it was yesterday morning" - indicating a longing for a simpler, happier time. However, the next stanza introduces the idea of mortality and fear of loss - "And I found out I was still breathing...And the fear that you might leave me".
The chorus is a bittersweet reminder of the power of love and imagination to transcend despair - "But I knew that you, with your heart beating and your eyes shining, would be dreaming of me lying with you on a Tuesday morning." The final stanza, however, takes a dark turn - "Turn your face from me, I will cover myself with sorrow...Bring Hell down upon me, and I will say goodbye tomorrow". The suggestion is that the singer is tired of the struggle and would rather embrace the eternal sleep of death than face the endless pain of living.

@@katoness - Instead of baseball cards & comics when I was a kid I bought records & later albums. I've been listening since 1959.
It took years & I knew lots of kids who also collected so it was fun. To be honest with you -- I have records I bought in the 70s I never got to. They're sealed.
The only drawback is that when I hear songs today I hear a melody that was already performed decades ago by someone else.
So, I can be annoying if you're a songwriter. But I laugh it off. Listening to music is a pleasure -- all kinds of music. It can even be therapeutic.
Thanks for asking, katoness.

This song is awesome. It really means a lot to my wife and me. We made love for the first time on a Tuesday morning November 1992. Automatically became our song. Has been with us from that moment. Had not heard it for a while, were separated for more than 1 year. Got back together and danced it this last May. Amazing , after 17 years and 4 kids, the magic was still there. Pogues and Tuesday Morning will always be with us.

The Pogues were incredibly great with Shane McGowan. Without him, there weren't incredible, but they were great. "Tuesday Morning" is proof enough. The instrumental interplay and the drive in such an optimistic tune is magic.

When I toured Ireland with Contiki in 1996, this was our tour group's theme song. I think our leader chose it because the trip began and ended on a Tuesday. My mother remarked that Summer of '96 was "the greatest summer of my life." Well, it came pretty damn close. Now, exactly 25 years later, I still remember. Erin go Bragh :-)
