Whiskey in the Jar
The Pogues feat. The Dubliners Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I met with captain Farrell and his money he was counting
I first produced me pistol and I then produced me rapier
Saying "Stand and deliver" for he were a bold deceiver
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar
I counted out his money and it made a pretty penny
I put it in me pocket and I took it home to Jenny
She sighed and she swore that she never would deceive me
But the devil take the women for they never can be easy
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar
I went unto my chamber, all for to take a slumber
I dreamt of gold and jewels and for sure it was no wonder
But Jenny drew me charges and she filled them up with water
Then sent for captain Farrell to be ready for the slaughter
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar
'Twas early in the morning, before I rose to travel
Up comes a band of footmen and likewise captain Farrell
I first produced me pistol for she'd stolen away my rapier
I couldn't shoot the water, so a prisoner I was taken
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar
If anyone can aid me 'tis my brother in the army
If I can find his station in Cork or in Killarney
And if he'll go with me, we'll go roamin' through Kilkenney
And I'm sure he'll treat me better than my own me sportin' Jenny
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar
There's some take delight in the carriages a rollin'
And others take delight in the hurly and the bowling
But I take delight in the juice of the barley
And courting pretty fair maids in the morning bright and early
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar
The Pogues and The Dubliners' song “Whiskey in the Jar” is an old Irish folk ballad that tells the story of a highwayman who meets Captain Farrell while wandering over the Kerry mountains. The singer asks Captain Farrell to hand over his gold, but the Captain denies having any. The highwayman pulls out his pistol and sword and once again demands the captain give up his gold. The captain is forced to comply and the highwayman runs away with the gold. He goes back to Jenny, his lover, and tells her about the events that unfold. Jenny fills the singer's gun with water to make it unusable, and then contacts the authorities, who come to arrest the highwayman. He is left with no choice but to ask for help from his brother in the army.
The song is most often performed as a rock song, and has become quite popular in Ireland and beyond. The tune can be traced back to the 17th century, having been composed sometime during the early years of the period. Its lyrics evolved over the years, with different versions being recorded by different artists. However, the core of the story has remained consistent, and the song has become a treasured part of Irish folk music.

Great how Ronnie and the rest of the Dubliners loved and admired Shane MacGowan and his take on Irish folk music, at a time when all the other established Irish folk artists were turning their noses up at the Pogues, calling them a disgrace, and blaming them for bringing Irish music into disrepute. The Dubliners, especially Ronnie, saw through this ignorance and gave Shane and the lads their seal of approval, and time has proven him to be 100% right in doing so! Most of the other musicians who denounced Shane and the Pogues at the time have faded into the background and have been forgotten, whilst Shane and the Pogues have carved themselves a permanent place among the legends of Irish music. Shane MacGowan and his music will still be listened to in 100 years time, whereas the artists who denounced him, like Noel Hill (who?) have been largely forgotten already... Lots of love and respect to Ronnie Drew, Shane MacGowan and all the other TRUE champions and saviours of the ETERNAL genre of REAL IRISH MUSIC... From David Hughes in County Longford, Ireland...

Well written, deserves more like to be honest.

What I love the most about Shane's singing is his raw emotion. He has a way of making these songs his, making you believe that he's singing about his own life, about his own experiences. It doesn't matter if the songs originated with someone else. You BELIEVE he's singing from experience (and he probably is).
@AMcGrath82
The Dubliners were legends and class acts, but the Pogues had some incredible musicians and that needs to be remembered.
