09. Wrapped Around Your Finger
The Police Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You consider me the young apprentice
Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes
Hypnotized by you if I should linger
Staring at the ring around your finger

I have only come here seeking knowledge
Things they would not teach me of in college
I can see the destiny you sold turned into a shining band of gold

I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger
Mephistopheles is not your name
I know what you're up to just the same
I will listen hard to your tuition
You will see it come to its fruition
I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger

Devil and the deep blue sea behind me
Vanish in the air you'll never find me
I will turn your face to alabaster
When you'll find your servant is your master

You'll be wrapped around my finger

You'll be wrapped around my finger
You'll be wrapped around my finger

Overall Meaning

The Police's song "Wrapped Around Your Finger" is a complex and poetic exploration of the power dynamics in a relationship. The song is told from the perspective of a young apprentice who is deeply enamored and caught up in the web of their partner’s mysterious and manipulative ways. The opening lines of the song set the scene for this dynamic - the singer is caught between the Scylla and Charybdis, two mythical sea monsters who represent the hazards of navigating treacherous waters.

The singer is hypnotized by their partner, who they metaphorically describe as a ring around their finger. They are willing to sacrifice their own desires and needs to be enveloped in their partner's spell. The singer is seeking knowledge and wisdom from their partner, but eventually realizes that what they thought was a partnership is actually a one-sided power dynamic. They recognize that they are not in control, but rather their partner has sold them a false destiny, which has led them down a path they did not want to take.

The singer is aware of the danger they are in, and they use imagery of the devil and the deep blue sea to describe the sense of unease they feel. Despite this, they are still willing to listen to their partner and do their bidding, even if it means becoming their servant rather than their equal. The song builds to a powerful climax, where the roles are reversed, and the singer declares that their partner will be wrapped around their finger, indicating a newfound sense of power and control in the relationship.

Overall, the song is a meditation on the complexities of relationships and the power dynamics that are often present, even when we don't realize it.

I am and I was back in the early 80's too, I remember listening to this on my dad's old motorola B100W tube stereo that we had in the hallway of our farm house growing up. I used to listen to that radio alot when I was very young. That radio always had awesome base sound and was just good sounding radio all around.
