Overall Meaning

The Police's song "Too Much Information" released in 1981, is a reflection of the fast-paced and information-heavy era of the '80s, where information overload is becoming overwhelming. Sting, the lead singer of the band, sings about the burden of unfiltered information in our minds, driving us crazy. The lyrics reflect the band's frustration with modern media, and how it inundated people with too much knowledge, creating overstimulated brains, unable to cope. The opening lines, "Too much information running through my brain, too much information driving me insane," leave no doubt about the song's theme.

The chorus "Overkill, overview, over my dead body, over me, over you, over everybody" showcases these various types of overindulgence experienced in our lives. The band sums up the song's theme by expressing their fatigue with every conceivable form that the information age presents to us. The song's title itself is used to comment on the endless flow of information via radio and television, contributing to the overwhelming sensations we feel daily. Despite its negative portrayal of the information age, the song is still regarded as one of The Police's most celebrated hits.
