Wrapped Around Your Finger
The Police Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You consider me the young apprentice
Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes
Hypnotized by you if I should linger
Staring at the ring around your finger

I have only come here seeking knowledge
Things they would not teach me of in college
I can see the destiny you sold turned into a shining band of gold

I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger
Mephistopheles is not your name
I know what you're up to just the same
I will listen hard to your tuition
You will see it come to its fruition
I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger

Devil and the deep blue sea behind me
Vanish in the air you'll never find me
I will turn your face to alabaster
When you'll find your servant is your master

You'll be wrapped around my finger

You'll be wrapped around my finger
You'll be wrapped around my finger

Overall Meaning

The Police's "Wrapped Around Your Finger" explores the unequal power dynamics in a relationship. Sting sings from the perspective of a young apprentice who is entranced and captivated by his lover, who holds all the power in this relationship. This is highlighted in the opening lines where Sting sings "You consider me the young apprentice," indicating that he is perceived as young and inexperienced in comparison to his partner. The usage of the allusion to the mythological sea monsters, Scylla, and Charybdis signify that Sting is caught between the desire to stay with his partner and the fear of the consequences that come with that.

Sting's character is willing to do anything to keep his partner happy, as he sings, "I will listen hard to your tuition, you will see it come to its fruition." Here, he is willing to submit and learn, no matter the cost, as long as it pleases his partner. This intense dependence and willingness to please is symbolized by Sting's character saying "I'll be wrapped around your finger." He is willing to be controlled and manipulated by his lover, which can be seen as a representation of emotional abuse in relationships.

Towards the end of the song, Sting's character takes a stand and reverses the power dynamics. He sings, "when you'll find your servant is your master" and changes the last line to "You'll be wrapped around my finger." In doing so, he gains control and changes the dynamic of the relationship, a move that could either break the relationship, or empower both parties to establish an equal power exchange.
