Sleeping In
The Postal Service Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Last week I had the strangest dream
where everything was exactly how it seemed
where there was never any mystery
of who shot John F Kennedy
It was just a man with something to prove,
slightly bored and severely confused
He steadied his rifle with his target in the center
and became famous on that day in November

Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in

Again last night I had that strange dream
where everything was exactly how it seemed
concerns about the world getting warmer
people thought that they were just being rewarded
for treating others as they'd like to be treated
for obeying stop signs and curing diseases
for mailing letters with the address of the sender
Now we can swim any day in November

Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in (Now we can swim any day in November)

Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in

Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping

Overall Meaning

The Postal Service's song "Sleeping In" is a dreamy, nostalgic ode to a simpler time, with lyrics that touch on themes of confusion, fame, and the desire for escape. The opening lines paint a picture of an idyllic world, where everything is exactly as it seems and there are no mysteries to solve. However, this perfect world is quickly shattered by the mention of John F. Kennedy's assassination, which serves as a reminder of the darker forces at play in the world.

The verses that follow continue to explore themes of disillusionment and confusion. The second verse touches on the topic of climate change, with people embracing the idea that the world is getting warmer as a reward for their good behavior. The lyrics then shift to more personal actions, like obeying stop signs and mailing letters, which are presented as equally important in the grand scheme of things.

Throughout the song, the lyrics are accompanied by dreamy, ethereal instrumentation that adds to the overall feeling of nostalgia and longing. The chorus, in particular, is a standout moment, with its repeated refrain of "Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in" serving as a plea for temporary escape from the complexities of the modern world.

Overall, "Sleeping In" is a beautifully crafted song that speaks to the universal desire for simplicity and escape. Its dreamlike quality and nostalgic themes make it a standout track that is sure to resonate with listeners of all ages.

Honestly, this is the best song about depression of all time for me. I'd go as far to say this is the official Depression Anthem. Emotionally triumphant even in the sensitive, quiet, solemn loneliness. Yes, it's anthemic, and beautifully so.
