The band released their self-titled first album in March 1995 via PopLlama Records. After they garnered massive acclaim, Columbia Records quickly signed them. The album peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and has shipped over three million copies. The RIAA has certified it as triple platinum. Songs "Peaches", "Kitty", "Lump", and "Dune Buggy" received major airplay.
Their 1996 follow-up album, "II", did not reach the same acclaim, though it reached the top forty on the Billboard 2000. Single "Mach 5" also garnered some airplay. The band then fell of the radar for many listeners, dropped by their major label. However, their albums of the new millennium, 'Freaked Out and Small' followed by 'Love Everybody' and 'These Are the Good Times People' (released in 2000, 2004, and 2008, respectively), picked up positive critical reviews, such as from the All Music Guide. Although their touring schedule became more sporadic into the 00s and 10s, they continue to perform and satisfy audiences with their off-beat humor and catchy hooks.

Dumpster breath she's my hungover lover
Strong as steel, four olive martini
Hand on her head and one on my weinie
She's in bed, she's suckin' on a candy cigarette
She's in bed, she's suckin' on a candy cigarette
She's in bed, suckin' on a candy cigarette
Suckin' on a candy cigarette
Three PM and we're slow to recover
We're hangin' out and well hungover
This Ernie Steele's makes a mean martini
So pass the fire and light me sweetie
She's in bed, suckin' on a candy cigarette
She's in bed, she's suckin' on a candy cigarette
She's in bed, suckin' on a candy cigarette
Suckin' on a candy cigarette
The lyrics to The Presidents of the United States of America's song Candy Cigarette describe a moment of recovery and comfort between two lovers. The singer and his partner are both dealing with hangovers, and they seek refuge under the covers of a bed. The woman is described as having "dumpster breath," but the singer still loves her. They also enjoy a strong martini, which they rely on to help them feel better. The candy cigarette represents a type of comfort or nostalgia, perhaps harkening back to a time when they were both children.
Overall, the song appears to depict a relationship that is imperfect but still loving. As the two recover from their indulgences, they find solace in each other's company, enjoying simple pleasures like candy cigarettes and martinis. Despite their flaws, they are able to make each other happy.
