The band released their self-titled first album in March 1995 via PopLlama Records. After they garnered massive acclaim, Columbia Records quickly signed them. The album peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and has shipped over three million copies. The RIAA has certified it as triple platinum. Songs "Peaches", "Kitty", "Lump", and "Dune Buggy" received major airplay.
Their 1996 follow-up album, "II", did not reach the same acclaim, though it reached the top forty on the Billboard 2000. Single "Mach 5" also garnered some airplay. The band then fell of the radar for many listeners, dropped by their major label. However, their albums of the new millennium, 'Freaked Out and Small' followed by 'Love Everybody' and 'These Are the Good Times People' (released in 2000, 2004, and 2008, respectively), picked up positive critical reviews, such as from the All Music Guide. Although their touring schedule became more sporadic into the 00s and 10s, they continue to perform and satisfy audiences with their off-beat humor and catchy hooks.

Little bag of bones been out all night

Can you hear him scratchin' at the screen door?

He needs some pettin' and lovin' on his head
He needs some pettin' and lovin' on his rain-soaked hide
He's circlin' around my ankle
He's circlin' around my ankle
He needs some pettin' and lovin' on his hide
Hey, kitty, won't you come inside
Kitty at my foot and I wanna touch it
Kitty at my foot and I wanna touch it

The song "Kitty" by The Presidents of the United States of America is a playful and irreverent ode to a cat. The lyrics describe the feline's presence as "little bag of bones" who has been out all night and is in need of attention. The singer expresses a desire to pet and touch the cat, and is lost in its "little yellow round eye." However, the cat becomes aggressive and scratches the singer, leading to an expletive-laden expulsion from the house.
The playful lyrics of "Kitty" are indicative of the band's humorous and offbeat style. The song's focus on a cat is a departure from the typical topics of rock songs, demonstrating the band's willingness to experiment and subvert conventions. The repeated chorus of "meow meow" reinforces the light-hearted tone of the song and adds to its catchy quality.
