Burn
The Pretty Reckless Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here comes the darkness
It's eating at my soul
Now that the spark has
Gone out of control
This fire is raging
I can't find the door
I just wanna die here
But you wanted more

You want me to burn
Want me to burn
Want me to hurt
And maybe I will finally learn

Here comes the darkness
It's eating at my brain
Now that the light has
Driven me insane
This fire is blazing
And I'm still inside
I just wanna die here
You won’'t let me out alive

You want me to burn
Want me to burn

Want me to hurt
And maybe I will finally learn

Overall Meaning

The Pretty Reckless's song "Burn" is a haunting exploration of the struggle to come to terms with one's own pain and darkness, and the pressure to conform to others' expectations. The opening line, "Here comes the darkness, it's eating at my soul," sets the tone for the bleak and brooding atmosphere of the song. The darkness is a metaphor for the singer's inner turmoil, and the fact that it's "eating" at her soul suggests that it's consuming her from the inside out. The next line, "Now that the spark has gone out of control," implies that this darkness was initially a small and manageable flame, but has now grown beyond her control.

The chorus of the song is a plea from someone who is struggling with their own pain and confusion to someone who is pressuring them to confront it. "You want me to burn, want me to hurt," they sing, almost accusingly. The other person may be trying to help, but the implication is that they're doing more harm than good. The singer says that they just want to die, and suggests that perhaps that's what the other person really wants too. "And maybe I will finally learn," they sing, as if accepting that their pain is necessary for their growth and understanding.

In the second verse, the darkness has shifted from the singer's soul to her brain, and the word "insane" is used. The fire is now "blazing," and the singer is still trapped inside, unable to escape. It's unclear who or what is keeping them there; it could be the other person or it could be their own fear and self-doubt. The repetition of the chorus reinforces the sense of desperation and futility that pervades the song.

Overall, "Burn" is a deeply introspective and emotionally fraught song that speaks to the universal experience of struggling with pain and anxiety. The lyrics are beautifully crafted, evoking vivid imagery and complex emotions with just a few words. The powerful guitar riffs and haunting vocals only add to the sense of raw intensity and vulnerability that the song conveys.

Seriously, there needs to be more female artists like her. She can actually write and her voice is so perfect.

There is an entire band, you're doing a disservice to the rest of the band by just labeling it as "her", that's really unfair.

True, I think you're kinda casting her in the limelight by singling out her band members, who help write the songs. In my experience, the most vastly understated people in a band are bassists and drummers, who help carry the beat whilst giving the viewers' attention to the guitarist and singer. You can almost not hear them, but when you take them out, you can notice the difference.

I'm a singer, and I started to sing with my guitar player a year ago, and my voice is so much stronger from then. YOU GUYS!
