Heaven Knows
The Pretty Reckless Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jimmy's in the back with a pocket of high
If you listen close
You can hear him cry

Oh, lord, heaven knows
We belong way down below
Sing it
Oh, lord, heaven knows
We belong way down below
Way down below, way down below

Judy's in the front seat picking up trash
Living on the dough
Gotta make that cash
Won't be pretty
Won't be sweet
She's just sittin' there on her feet

Sing it
Oh, lord, heaven knows
We belong way down below
Go
Oh, lord, heaven knows
We belong way down below
Sing
Oh, lord, tell us so
We belong way down below
Oh, Lord, tell us so
We belong way down below
Way down below, way down below
Way down below, way down below

I've had better days, man
I've seen better days
I've had better ways, man
I know better ways

One, two, three and four
The devil's knocking at your door
Caught in the eye of a dead man's lie
Show you life with your head held high
Now you're on your knees
With your head hung low
Big man tells you where to go
Tell 'em it's good
Tell 'em okay
Don't do a goddamn thing they say

Oh, lord, heaven knows
We belong way down below
Oh, lord, tell us so
We belong way down below
Way down below, way down below
Way down below, way down below

I've seen better ways, man
I know better ways
I've seen better days, man
I've had better days

Jeanna's in the back with a pocket of high
If you listen close
You can hear the crying

Oh, lord, heaven knows
We belong way down below
Oh, lord, tell us so
We belong way down below
Oh, lord, heaven knows
We belong way down below
Oh, lord, tell us so
We belong way down below

Way down below, way down below
Way down below, way down below

Way down below, way down below
Way down below, way down below

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Heaven Knows" by The Pretty Reckless tackle the dark realities of life and the hardships of society's marginalized individuals. The first verse introduces Jimmy, who is depicted as a drug user and a cry for help. He is in the back with a pocket of high, and if you listen closely, you can hear him cry. The following verse focuses on Judy, who appears to be a sex worker or someone trying to make ends meet by collecting trash. The lyrics suggest that life is not easy for her, and it won't be pretty or sweet.

The chorus repeats the phrase, "Oh, Lord, heaven knows we belong way down below," while emphasizing the song's central theme of feeling trapped and belonging to the lower class. The second half of the chorus repeats the phrase and ends with, "tell us so," indicating that the individuals in the song are longing for a guiding light or a way out of their desperate situations.

The third verse mentions Jeanna, who's also spoken of having "a pocket of high." The verse repeats the same sentiment as the first, referring to the agony that Jeanna is experiencing, and how it's not evident to those around her. The song represents the harsh reality of society's overlooked individuals, their struggles under the system, and how their cries for help are left unheard.

@romantrampler4891

I will never forget this moment: was the night from March 31st to April 1st 2014 - I was listening to our local Rock radio station ('Rock Antenne' on 87.9fm in Bavaria ;) ). The midnight news including perfect weather for the next day were just over, then a bell started ringin' - '...Jimmy's in back with a pocket of high... If you listen close you can hear him cry...'.
No joke, I started jumping up to the ceiling instantly, and when she said '... - go!' I nearly got out of my mind. Next morning I went over to the local mall record store and asked for the album - at least they could order it. As soon as I got it some two weeks later - in BLOOD RED VINYL!!! ;) ) - it ran down on my turntable 12 to 16 times a day - for a couple of weeks...

'Try to live your life with your head up high
Now you're on your knees with your head hung low
Big man tells you where to go
Tell them it's good, tell them okay -
DON'T DO A GODDAMN THING THEY SAY!!!'

No need to say more... ;))

@Michael Hicks I can't find any TV use of this song on IMDB, though it was in a 2017 movie called American Satan that might have been on TV. But "Make Me Wanna Die" was used in an episose of Supernatural in 2017. (Hmm. Does that mean PR is classic rock?)

@WolvesAndSnakes

This song is in American Satan ♥️ just like a fun fact

I started to watch 'Gossip Girl' on the weekend and I instantly fell in love with Jenny, the character that Taylor plays there. And then I thought "Hey, Taylor Momsen - Isn't she that singer from this band? The Pretty...Reckless? Ok let's check her songs out" So I searched a song and FUCKING HELL I DID REALLY NOT EXPECT THAT TAYLOR HAS SUCH AN AMAZING STRONG VOICE. GUESS WHO'S MY NEW QUEEN NOW
