LAY DOWN
The Priestess Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lay down, sleep my little darling
I'll be nothing when you're gone
Lay down just like in a coffin
Then I'll have nothing but a song
Could I leave you in a coffin for real
And just leave you in a church

Lay down
Leave you'll be lonely
I know I won't go
Lay down
Sleep you'll be lonely
I know I won't go
It's not my turn

Lay down, this pain will be long gone
With the absence of your breath
I know that you loved me
But I can't love you when you're dead
So I'll leave you in that coffin for God
And I'll leave you in the dirt

Lay down
Leave you'll be lonely
I know I won't go
Lay down
Sleep you'll be lonely
I know I won't go
Lay down before me

I know I won't go
It's not my turn

Overall Meaning

The Priestess's song "Lay Down" seems to talk about death and the aftermath of it. The song begins with the lyrics "Lay down, sleep my little darling. I'll be nothing when you're gone. Lay down just like in a coffin. Then I'll have nothing but a song." This verse suggests that someone close to the singer has passed away, and they are telling them to rest in peace. However, the singer also remarks that they will be left with nothing but a song after the person is gone. They go on to question their ability to leave the person in a coffin after they die.

The second verse of the song is more heartbreaking, with the lyrics "Lay down, leave you'll be lonely. I know I won't go. Sleep you'll be lonely. It's not my turn." The person singing to the deceased is acknowledging the loneliness that they will feel without them but also expressing that they cannot join them in the afterlife. This verse invokes a sense of melancholy, loneliness and helplessness.

The final verse talks about how time will heal the pain of losing the person, but their love cannot continue beyond the person's death. They express that they will leave the deceased's coffin for God to deal with and will leave them in the dirt. The final line "It's not my turn" suggests they may not know when they will meet the same fate, which is both humbling and saddening.

In summary, the song is a lamentation for a loved one that has passed away. The song touches on the emotional turmoil, the feeling of losing something irretrievable and the gradual separation of minds that follows death.
