Trainwreck
The Prize Fight Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So tell me, who do you think you are
To tell me that I don't belong here
Or anywhere at all (anywhere beside you)

I've pulled my punches for the last time
And now you'll get what you deserve
So be afraid,
I've got my ways of making you feel the way I do

So tell me, how you're feeling now
Knowing that you're hated
By everyone you know (everyone's against you)

I can only blankly stare off for so long
And listen as you tell me that you can do no wrong
Well I proved you wrong

And if I never see you again
You and I both know that it will be too soon
So fold your arms and just pretend
That you care at all if I leave standing
And hold my head up high until the end

At last the moment has come for us to talk it out
This argument is one sided so much that I can tell
Just by the sound of your voice
I'm getting closer to the real reason you're miserable
So baby, go and cry about it

Next time you see me I hope you'll want to talk about it
Cause if you think I'll take it again, you've got another thing coming
And most important of all, I'm here to let you know
I never knew I could hate until I met you

Why can't you treat me the way that you want to be treated

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Trainwreck" by the Prize Fight describe a situation where the singer has been mistreated and ostracized by someone who they had trusted and thought highly of. The lines "So tell me, who do you think you are, To tell me that I don't belong here, Or anywhere at all," express the frustration and hurt that the singer feels when this person tells them they don't belong. The repeated phrases "So be afraid," and "I've got my ways of making you feel the way I do" suggest that the singer has been holding back and is now ready to retaliate against this person who has been causing them so much pain.

One of the most potent parts of the lyrics is the bridge, which details the tension between the two and the moment where the singer finally confronts the one who has been hurting them. "At last the moment has come for us to talk it out, This argument is one-sided so much that I can tell, Just by the sound of your voice." The scene has a cinematic quality to it, as if we were watching a confrontation between two characters in a movie. The chorus, repeated several times throughout the song, tells us that if the two were to meet again, the singer would want to hash it out and have a civil conversation, but it seems unlikely, as the hurt they feel is too deep.

Some interpretations of the song argue that it's about a romantic relationship, while others suggest it's about a problematic friendship or even a work relationship gone sour. The lyrics, while not providing clarity on the type of connection between the two parties, do communicate the pain and frustration of feeling like you don't belong or that someone you trusted has turned against you.
