Long Black Veil
The Proclaimers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ten years ago, on a cold dark night
Someone was killed, 'neath the town hall light
There were few at the scene, but they all agreed
That the slayer who ran, looked a lot like me

The judge said son, what is your alibi
If you were somewhere else, then you won't have to die
I spoke not a word, thou it meant my life
For I'd been in the arms of my best friend's wife

[Chorus]
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees
Nobody knows but me

Oh, the scaffold is high and eternity's near
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear
But late at night, when the north wind blows
In a long black veil, she cries ov're my bones

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

In The Proclaimers' song "Long Black Veil," the singer recalls a cold, dark night ten years ago when someone was killed under the town hall light. Despite few witnesses, they all agreed that the killer resembled the singer. When brought before the judge, the singer refused to give an alibi because it would have exposed the fact that they were in the arms of their best friend's wife. As a result, the singer was sentenced to death and executed by hanging.

The song's chorus tells of the best friend's wife walking the hills in a long black veil and visiting the singer's grave when the night winds wail. Nobody knows or sees her, but she continues to cry over the singer's bones in a long black veil. The song is a haunting tale of love, betrayal, and the consequences that can arise from breaking a promise.
