Emergency! Emergency!
The Promise Ring Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes I wake up early to say goodbye
Just in case you don't come back.
I know the coffee leaves by car,
Because it goes fast really far.

Then that's where you are.
And soon the room can't tell you were here,
And there's dust in my hair
And dusty air has gone crazy for something late in the year,

And water everywhere.
Sometimes I wake up early to say hello,
Tell you everything you already know.
So early I start watching the bed,

Where we are attacked and we are one.
We come all undone.
When I come around,
Some lost and some found,

I know you'll be here on the ground when I come around.

I'll come around come around come around then I'll go around.
Very Emergency, SOS.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Promise Ring's song Emergency! Emergency! seem to describe the anxiety and uncertainty that comes with a long-distance relationship or a relationship that is on the rocks. The singer describes waking up early, either to say goodbye or hello to their partner, just in case they don't come back. The mention of coffee leaving by car suggests that the partner might be leaving and going far away. The singer also mentions that the partner's presence in the room is fleeting, disappearing quickly as they leave. The line "water everywhere" could represent the tears that come with the uncertainty of the relationship.

The chorus of the song seems to describe the singer's hope that their relationship will survive despite the distance and uncertainty. The repeated phrase "When I come around" suggests that they will be making efforts to visit and reconnect with their partner. The phrase "Some lost and some found" could mean that some efforts to reconnect will be successful, while others will not.

Overall, the lyrics to Emergency! Emergency! convey a sense of longing, uncertainty, and hope that many people may relate to in their own relationships.

@EaT YoUR CerEal I never realized Davey had a lisp back in the day either until my friend pointed it out to me after years of listening to them. Later on I got to meet him and Dan when they were doing Maritime, they are nice guys

Isaac Borck (Modest Mouse) also comes to mind...although this is more pronounced.

Norek Family Explosion

By some miracle, I saw the "Very Emergency" video once on MTV circa 1998 (probably towards the very end, right before the network stopped showing actual music videos). Song has been stuck in my head ever since!!
