Not Exactly
The Rainbirds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am sad alright
But what a waste of time
I held you much too close
And now there's something missing
But I can't see the empty space
Something else has taken place
I am sad alright
But what a waste of tears
I held you much too close
And now there's someone missing
She is gone without a trace
Just the expression on her face:
What a waste
There's a flame and a fire and a body burning up
And a bird on a shape made of steel ohoh
He keeps on singing

it's not exactly what you think
Not exactly what you see
Not exactly what you've learned
And what you will be learning

I am sad alright
But what a waste of breath
I'm only talking to relieve
Although there's no one listening
He is gone without a trace
Just the expression on his face:
Who's to blame?
There's a flame and a fire and a body burning up
And a bird on a shape made of steel, ohoh
He keeps on singing

it's not exactly what you think
Not exactly what you see

Not exactly what you've learned
And what you will be learning

Overall Meaning

The Rainbirds’s song “Not Exactly” is a song that tells a tale of a lost love that has left the singer feeling sad and alone. The lyrics are a reflection of the singer’s introspection, which stems from the realization that they had held the person they were in love with too close, and now there is something missing. The absence of the lover has left the singer feeling empty, and they can't see the empty space as something else has taken place. The singer is sad, but the sadness is also a waste of time, tears, and breath as they try to talk to relieve themselves, but there's no one listening. They question who's to blame, as the lover is gone without a trace, expressed only on their face. Overall, the song is a beautiful and poignant reflection on heartbreak and loss.

Ich mag die Musik. Erinnert mich an meinen Westberliner Zeit. Schade eigentlich. Was ist geschehen?
