Animals
The Rakes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We are the animals,
Who have lost our hair.
Retained some of our teeth,
And gained a choice

We'll chase food, money and sex,
Until satisfied.
And when its time to rest,
Ask 'whats next?

We are all animals [Repeat: x4]

Well its hard enough to retain control,
When our instincts are egging us on,
With biologists and chemists reducing our souls,
To four letters
And when we think about it,
We're like a masterpiece,
Whose glimpsed, the artist?

We are, the machines,
Carrying our various genes.
Then discarded,
When the job is done.
We are the disciples,
Who have lost our way.
Kicked from our pedestal when Darwin burnt the book

We are all animals [Repeat: x4]

Well its hard enough to retain control,
When our instincts are egging us on,
Biologists and chemists reducing our souls,
To four letters
Will genes replace Genesis?
We're like a masterpiece,
Whose glimpsed the artist?

We like to think we're at a special place, the stars revolve around the human race,
But we're just mammals, just, primates
Like chimps or guerrillas
We see the hair on our face,

And look at another primate,
You and I, we relate

Overall Meaning

The song "Animals" by The Rakes explores the idea that humans are just animals with complex thinking abilities. The lyrics are a commentary on human behavior and desires, comparing them to those seen in the animal kingdom. The opening line, "we are the animals, who have lost our hair," refers to humans' evolutionary path from primates to hairless creatures, retaining some of our primal instincts and basic necessities.

The lyrics go on to describe how humans strive to fulfill their needs for food, money, and sex until they are satisfied, and then question what comes next. The chorus repeats the phrase "we are all animals" four times, emphasizing that humans are no different from other creatures on earth.

The second verse talks about the struggle for humans to control their instincts and impulses. The song compares this battle to a masterpiece whose artist is just glimpsed, emphasizing that humans are a complex creation yet still subject to basic instincts. The bridge of the song asks whether genes will replace the idea of creation and genesis, ultimately asking the listener to question our place in the world as animals.
