Still Standing
The Rasmus Lyrics

I wish you were here tonight with me
I wish I could have you by my side tonight the sky is burning
I wish I could have you by my side
Cause I've been down
Now I've been crawling
Won't get down no more
[Chorus:]
Can't you stop the lies
Falling from the skies
Down on me
I'm still standing
Can't you roll the dice
I might be surprised
Conscience clear
I'm still standing here
Burns like a thousand stars, though you are light years away
Burns like a thousand stars and more
Cause you're up there
You're always with me
Smiling down on me
[Chorus]
Something sacred, something so beautiful
Something quiet to ease my mind
While the pressure's taking me over and over
Cause I've been down
And I've been crawling
Closed around and always falling
You're up there
You're always with me
Smiling down on me
[Chorus:Repeat x2]
The Rasmus's song Still Standing expresses a longing for a loved one's presence amidst the beauty of the northern lights. The opening lines of the song, "I wish you were here tonight with me to see the northern lights," portray the singer's desire for companionship and a shared experience. The northern lights are used as a metaphor for the beauty of life that the singer wishes to share with their loved one. The repetition of "I wish" in the first verse emphasizes the singer's desire for companionship with the person they yearn for, who is presumably not there with them. The second verse, however, shifts the focus more on the singer's strength and ability to persevere. Despite being physically apart, the singer believes the person they miss is always with them, "smiling down on me."
The chorus stresses the importance of honesty and self-respect. The lines "Can't you stop the lies falling from the skies down on me," suggest that the singer has been subjected to lies and deceit. Although hurt, they remain "still standing," with a "conscience clear." The second line "Can't you roll the dice I might be surprised" is an invitation to take a chance on someone rather than always expecting the worst.
Overall, the song portrays the tension between the singer's longing for companionship and their strength to persevere on their own. It is a poignant message of hope, resilience, and perseverance.
