One For My Baby
The Rat Pack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's quarter to three,
There's no-one in the place,
'Cept Joe and me.
So set 'em up Joe,
I've got a little story
I think you should know
We're drinking my friend,
To the end of a brief episode.
Make it one for my baby, and one more
For the road.
I've got the routine,
Put another nickel in the machine.
I'm feeling so bad,
Won't you make the music easy and sad.
I could tell you a lot, but it's not
In a gentleman's code.
So make it one for my baby, and one more
For the road.
You'd never know it, but buddy I'm a kind of poet,
And I got a lot of things I like to say
So when I'm gloomy, won't you listen to me,
'Til it's talked away.
Well, that's how it goes,
And Joe I know you're getting anxious to close
And thanks for the cheer
I hope you didn't mind my bending your ear.
But this touch that I've found
Must be drowned or it soon might explode...
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road...
The long

It's so long
The long and winding road.

Overall Meaning

The Rat Pack's song One For My Baby is a classic song that depicts a man drowning in his sorrows at a bar after experiencing a heartbreak. The song starts with the lyrics "It's quarter to three, there's no-one in the place, 'Cept Joe and me" which creates a solemn and desolate mood. The singer then tells the bartender "So set 'em up Joe, I've got a little story I think you should know" indicating that he wants to share his sorrows with someone. He then reflects on the brief episode of his life that has come to an end and to cope with his emotions, he asks Joe to pour him a drink and make it one for his baby and one more for the road. He knows he has to leave but he's not yet ready to face reality and the only way to numb the pain is to keep drinking.

The singer then asks Joe to play some sad music because he's feeling low and wants to explain his situation. He reveals that he's a poet and he has a lot of things to say but can't share them because of the gentleman's code. He then thanks Joe for listening to him and hopes that he didn't mind his ramblings. The singer realizes that he needs to drown his emotions before they implode and make his life more miserable. The last line of the song "Make it one for my baby, and one more for the road, the long, it's so long, the long and winding road," accentuates the overwhelming sadness and misery of the singer, who knows that he has a long, difficult journey ahead.
