Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends
The Rat Pack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This could be our last goodnight together
We may never pass this way again
Just let me enjoy 'till its over
Or forever
Please don't tell me how the story ends

See the way our shadows come together
Softer than your fingers on my skin
Someday this may be all
That we'll remember
Of each other
Please don't tell me how the story ends

Never's just the echo of forever
Lonesome as the love that might have been
Just let me go on loving and believing
'Till it's over
Please don't tell me how the story ends

Please don't tell me how the story ends

Overall Meaning

The Rat Pack's song "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends" is a melancholic tune that reflects on the fleeting nature of life and love. The lyrics are a plea from the singer to his companion not to spoil their last precious moments together by revealing how their story will end. The singer acknowledges that this may be their last goodnight, and that they may never have the chance to experience this moment again. He begs his partner to let him relish it until it is over or forever.

The song paints a picture of two shadows coming together and the delicate touch of the singer's partner's fingers on his skin. He treasures this moment and is fearful that it is all they will remember of each other someday. The singer acknowledges that "never" is just the echo of "forever" and that it is as lonesome as the love that might have been. He prays that he can go on loving and believing until the end and that his companion will not take that away from him.

Overall, "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends" is a bittersweet ballad that reminds us to treasure every moment because we never know when it might be our last.

One of my favourite songs by Sammy. I think he is so underrated.

Janetta McGee

I've loved this song since I first heard it by country singer Ronnie Millsap back in the mid-70's. I bought a used CD at Goodwill about 6 months ago that had various artists on it. This was one of the songs and I'd never heard this version. Sammy does this so differently and I like it the best. I play it over and over. Sammy could sing any style and make it better. And he could dance and act. He was amazing.

I met and talked with him as a child back in '63 on a set at WB in Burbank. He was a very nice man. A few years ago, I unexpectantly saw his grave in a private area at Forrest Lawn in Glendale.
