STANDING ON THE CORNER
The Rat Pack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Standing on a corner watching all the girls go by
Standing on a corner watching all the girls go by
Brother you don't know a nicer occupation
Matter of fact, neither do I
Than standing on a corner watching all the girls
Watching all the girls, watching all the girls go by

I'm the cat that got the cream
Haven't got a girl but I can dream
Haven't got a girl but I can wish
So I'll take me down to Main street
And that's where I select my imaginary dish

Standing on a corner watching all the girls go by
Standing on a corner giving all the girls the eye
Brother if you've got a rich imagination
Give it a whirl, give it a try
Try standing on a corner watching all the girls
Watching all the girls, watching all the girls go by

Brother you can't go to jail for what you're thinking
Or for that woo look in your eye

Standing on the corner watching all the girls
Watching all the girls, watching all the girls go by

Overall Meaning

The Rat Pack's "Standing on the Corner" is a playful and upbeat song about the joys of people-watching, and watching girls go by. The song is a relaxed, almost lazy tune with lively horn and saxophone arrangements, that encourages and celebrates the art of observing and admiring people in public spaces.

The lyrics repeat the phrase – standing on a corner, watching all the girls go by - several times, showcasing how much the singer enjoys the act of watching, and how it can be considered an enjoyable pastime. The song encourages listeners to observe and enjoy the world and the people around them.

The second verse speaks to the impossibility of having a romantic partner, but the joy is in the dreaming, which is a common theme in Rat Pack songs, emphasizing the importance of imagining and fantasizing to create a feeling of contentment.

The final verse encourages listeners to give into their amorous thoughts and enjoy the pleasures of visual appreciation, with the singer explaining that no one can be arrested for their thoughts, and the woozy look in their eyes when they see someone they like.

Overall, "Standing on the Corner" is a lighthearted, fun, and catchy song that encourages people to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, like observing others, and indulging in one's fantasies.

When I was 15 in 1994 a small, but rough, town in Norfolk called Thetford held a U-16 rave called Hyperdance in the local sports hall. It was only about an 8th full. But Ratpack played for a fraction of their normal fee. I lived for the scene then, my bedroom was literally wallpapered with fliers. They played a wicked long set and were incredible. At the end when everyone was leaving I went to the toilet and saw the youth ventre organiser and in my ecstasy fuelled state thanked her for organising it......and in the corner chilling out were some blackblokes with dreads, a rare sight in a small Norfolk town.....then it dawned on me ...IT WAS THE RATPACK, I asked the youth worker if I could talk to them, she said yes. As a skinny naive 15 year old white boy, who got intimidated just getting fliers from record shops, I was very intimdated they were all well built smoking weed which was rare then cos all you could get was hash back then. But I went up to them and praised them on their wicked live set, and they pulled up a chair for me, and each one took the time to sign my Fantazia top. Lovely blokes, found it hilarious talking to this twitching little 15 year old with rolling eyes and a stuckout jaw. They inspired me to start Djing, Inever made it big, but was a good and respected techno DJ whoused to play at all the illegals in Norfolk after Hardcore evolved intojungle, then D and B. Cos Norfolkis reallyrural with no clubs raves were held in mainly marquees in fields, barn,or the beach, and occassionally unused warehouses in Norwich.
