What you want, baby, I got it
What you need, do you know I got it?
All I'm askin' is for a little respect when you get home
(Just a little bit) hey baby
(Just a little bit) when you get home
(Just a little bit) mister
(Just a little bit)
I ain't gonna do you wrong while you're gone
Ain't gon' do you wrong 'cause I don't wanna
All I'm askin' is for a little respect when you come home
(Just a little bit) baby
(Just a little bit) when you get home
(Just a little bit) yeah
(Just a little bit)

I'm about to give you all of my money
And all I'm askin' in return, honey
Is to give me my propers when you get home
(Just a, just a, just a, just a) yeah, baby
(Just a, just a, just a, just a) when you get home
(Just a little bit) yeah
(Just a little bit)

Ooh, your kisses, sweeter than honey
And guess what? So is my money
All I want you to do for me, is give it to me when you get home
(Re, re, re ,re) yeah baby
(Re, re, re ,re) whip it to me
(Respect, just a little bit) when you get home, now
(Just a little bit)

R-e-s-p-e-c-t, find out what it means to me
R-e-s-p-e-c-t, take care, tcb, oh
(Sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me)
A little respect
(Sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me)
Whoa, babe
(Just a little bit) a little respect
(Just a little bit) I get tired
(Just a little bit) keep on tryin'
(Just a little bit) you're runnin' out of fools
(Just a little bit) and I ain't lyin'
(Just a little bit)
(Re, re, re, re) start when you come home
(Re, re, re, respect) or you might walk in
(Just a little bit) and find out I'm gone
(Just a little bit) I gotta have

(Just a little bit) a little respect
(Just a little bit)

Overall Meaning

The Rationals' song Respect is all about earning respect and demanding it in a relationship. The lyrics convey a message that the singer is willing to give everything, including money and kisses, but expects respect in return. The repetition of the phrase "just a little bit" throughout the song adds a touch of humor to the lyrics, making it sound playful instead of too intense or serious.

In the first verse, the singer tells the listener that they have everything they need, but all they are asking for is a little respect when they get home. In the second verse, the singer assures the listener that they won't do them wrong while they are gone. They would like the same treatment from the listener and be respected when they come home. The chorus strongly emphasizes the phrase "just a little bit" and the phrase "when you come home" because these are the two key elements that the singer is expecting from their partner.

The third verse is where the singer asks for what they believe is rightfully theirs. They are willing to give all their money to their partner, but all they want in return is a little respect. The final verse is playful and flirty, with the singer complementing her partner's kisses while also emphasizing what they need in return. The song ends with a powerful and repeated message of wanting respect from their partner.

That's me sitting on the end by the bass player. Mary Tyler Moore flip and my cherished wooden bead necklace. And yes, the bass player almost hit me in the head with the guitar -- still remember it!!

I have always loved the tone of the Epiphone Riviera guitar on this. First time I saw them was at a "Teen Fair" at Detroit's Cobo Hall back in the 60's. I was about fifteen at the time and played there with a five piece band. I was amazed at how full these guys sounded with just a harmonica, guitar, bass and drums. Of course they were pros and we were kids just starting out. It was all so amazing. I can't beleive I'm now seventy years old. I ended up performing locally in clubs and for special events for many years. I'm glad we still have these videos. My thoughts.

This was a single in 1966 and I remember it well. This was the first version I ever heard of Respect and for me it is the definitive version. I never did warm up to Aretha Franklyn's more popular version. (Aretha covered a lot of songs, now that I remember.)
